ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Acting Premier and Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) has announced a new Government subsidy on residential electricity in the Virgin Islands.

Hon Rymer in a statement on September 12, 2022, said subsidy will be implemented over the rising fuel cost and rising electricity cost as a result of the Russia-Ukraine war escalating in February 2022.

“This has been no fault of the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC). It has been the result of the high cost of fossil fuels on the international market,” he added.

Fuel surcharge tied to cost of fuel - Hon Rymer

The Minister highlighted that the formula for calculating electricity bills is set in legislation. Electricity bills have three major components in their calculation. He said first there is a flat $2.50 per month for the service and, secondly, there are standard charges based on the quantity of energy consumed.

“The third component is the fuel oil surcharge, which is tied to the price of fuel; and oil prices have risen to record high levels since the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Again, as a government, we have been listening to the pleas from the public. Additionally, we, the Ministers and Members of the Government, have also been experiencing increases in the fuel oil surcharges in our private electricity bills,” he added.

He revealed that in the Schedule of Additional Provisions (SAP) recently approved by the Cabinet and the House of Assembly (HOA), Government has allocated some funds to help to lower residential electricity bills.

“Government will be subsidising 50% of the fuel oil surcharge on residential electricity bills for the months of October and November 2022, and for the month of December 2022, the subsidy will be 100% of the fuel oil surcharge for residential electricity bills.

Gov't remains committed to helping residents  - Hon Rymer

Hon Rymer said even as the SAP was approved by Cabinet about three weeks ago, and passed by the HOA about two weeks ago, certain measures needed to be put in place for implementation, which has since been completed so that the subsidy can be put into effect as being announced on Monday.

He related that the Government of the Virgin Islands hopes that this measure will ease the burden of residents as the VI navigate difficult times caused by global events.

“I wish to reiterate that as a Government, we share your concerns about the prices of goods and services, and we remain committed to doing everything possible to provide the support that is needed to help you through these challenging times,” he said in closing.

People wake up. This man isn't smart at all only book smart. I was raised that you can dig and hole and strike gold and get rich. That's what they teach you in school. Gas is under ground all crap. I moved here and see the truth gas is man made. I watch people open a has station on a parcel block without digging a hole to strike gas so the teaching is wrong. Go ask the owners for all the gas stations if you don't believe me it's called research the information that your given to see if it adds up with your teaching from school. The inflation is planned by all government to bring in the digital system because the dollar bill has to crash to start the New world order. Get educated people with common sense . You all comments proved to me that Jesus does have many sheeps who in his character. They said Jesus died for your sin so why the biggest sin ever to happened he let it happen. Use your brains thats what it is for stop looking up the information on the net without using your brains because the elites programmed the computer. The computer can not program itself ok.

Dear Hon Myron Walwyn, thank you so much for your sensible article the other day providing suggestions to this high electricity nightmare. Without your sense, a whole government could not work out a solution by themselves and they would just be going on and on in the media and the HOA about the electricity problem (AKA hot air) with absolutely no vision whatsoever for a sensible resolve. They got the power (for now) but you got the sense. And DA MEK SENSE!!!!

Nice subsidy yes but ask yourself who is really paying for this? Our govt doesn’t print money so it must come from you taxpayers. The money spent here will mean less available for Ac at the sports complex and our much needed elevator at the govt building. In all seriousness though there is a financial tool BVIEC could have been using to prevent this in the first place. It’s called hedging. Any smart business that has critical input like fuel cost will employ hedging strategies to stabilize the impact of price changes. Airlines do it all the time. In this territory we are surrounded by financial talent that attracts billions of dollars from around the world. When we get some of this talent to help our pitiful local government???

Interesting but that's a question for electricity and not for the government. Governments subsidise. If your tax money contributing towards reducing your bills, isnt that like getting your tax back. I'm not sure where is the sin.

This should be capped: folks with swimming pools and big houses shouldn't be subsidised like an average person. Cap should be a maximum of $150 per account or similar.
