ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Government has signalled its commitment to completing the project for the elderly home to be located at Spooner’s Estate and also noted that land is still to be distributed to persons previously identified to receive land in the area.

Speaking on the NDP radio programme last evening, November 4, 2013, Premier Dr. The Hon. D. Orlando Smith said it is still government’s intention to develop a home at the location as it has been several years now since government saw it important to look after the elderly as best as possible.

In response to a resident’s query, the Premier restated that government is pursuing the establishment of a multi-purpose facility in this regard that could be used to the benefit of the elderly.

“Already some work has begun, but it takes some time to complete all the plans, get things to tender and get the project moving on, so that is where [it is] going,” Dr Smith stated.

“I haven’t heard the government speak anything about Spooner’s Estate except for the home they are going to build up there. What’s happening with the property at Spooner Estate, because I heard all kind of different rumours and I haven’t heard anything about Spooner’s Estate,” the resident queried.

Addressing the issue of the distribution of land at Spooner’s Estate, Dr Smith stated that some lands have already been given out during the NDP government’s last period in office after it had developed a list of persons who were supposed to receive land in the area.

Premier Smith noted that the land is currently being subdivided for applicants who have already been identified to receive land for development purposes. He did not give a time-frame for the completion of the subdivision exercise.

“Now what has happened, is that there is a division being undertaken, the land is being subdivided so that it could be identified so that people who have applied can then be allocated,” Dr Smith said.
