ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI -Noting that he considers himself and colleagues to be extremely fortunate in being supported by the group of dedicated and hard-working public officers that make up the public sector, including Central Government and the statutory corporations and companies which are owned by it, Premier Dr. D. Orlando Smith during his budget address in the House of Assembly on January 17, 2012 said his Government would be placing much emphasis on strengthening the public sector to acceptable levels

“The Public Sector should be foremost in our efforts to engender national pride, and must be leaders in policy development, efficiency of operations and effectiveness. My colleagues and I will do our level best to ensure that in places where the public sector is not up to the required standard, that we will partner with them to improve it to the acceptable levels, and in places where there is excellence, seek to utilize the lessons learnt there to improve other areas.”

According to Dr. Smith, the advice and insight of the sector are “critical to our success and as such I wish to indicate that their input is both welcomed and encouraged at all times. This ethos of inclusion Madam Speaker, is not only our modus operandi, but is essential to achieving good governance and getting results in the Public Sector”.

As a consequence, Dr. Smith said Government is restoring all procedural and standard administrative practices inherent in an institution such as the Public Sector, including expeditious communication of the decisions of Cabinet to the defacto head of the civil service, the Deputy Governor and the senior management group of the Civil Service which is comprised of the Permanent Secretaries and Financial Secretary to ensure the implementation of Cabinet decisions made, with the necessary assistance of the entire Service.

Because in the real world, you only get a raise (increment) when you perform above and beyond! Governments all over the world are laying off but you all getting the bowels over a decrease in raise which some of you shouldn't get in the first place. They should've laid off the dead weight and cut the increment all together for the slackers! That's value for money! Instead, they pander to you all for political reasons and you all still can't be grateful!!
