Minister of Work, transportation and Utilities Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) at the contract signing said, “The vision for the road network throughout the Territory is to have first-class roads.  Within the Ministry of Transportation, Works and Utilities, we are working to see that come to fruition.  We are working in tandem with the RDA and we are proud to have arrived at this phase to completion.”

Extensive roadworks planned

The release noted, “The project will complete the extensive road works executed at those sites by local contractors, who have completed critical slope stabilisation and road rehabilitation works to include subsurface works, retaining infrastructure and concrete works.”

Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Recovery and Development Agency, Mr. Anthony S. McMaster expressed his pleasure in signing the contract to allow the works to progress to completion.

“I would like to thank Tortola Paving Ltd. for winning this contract and having the opportunity to work with the RDA to complete these works,” Mr. McMaster said.

According to information, the project was tendered through the RDA’s National Competitive Bidding process acting on behalf of the Ministry of Transportation, Works and Utilities with Funding provided through the Government of the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean Development Bank Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Loan.

Hon. Rymer we need water lines installed in our area. Promises and promises you made but nothing up to now. Government could do with some of that revenue if you would only get the pipes laid and start billing us. We are ready and waiting.to pay.

Why do we have a public works department if we give contracts for things they should be doing

The road network in the BVI is nothing to be proud about, ie, poor design, poor drainage, poor construction, poor maintenance and repair, short useful life…….etc. Road resurfacing is preventative maintenance, ie, seal coating, overlay….etc and repair, not road construction. What is the design life of this road work? Will the road experience rapid deterioration with the first medium to heavy rain? What type of warranty does the contract have?

We keep employing the same inefficient, ineffective and wasteful road construction and maintenance practices over and over expect different results: Insanity. Over the years, the BVI spend $MMM on roads with poor outcomes. Develop and implement a strong road networking programme and stop wasting taxpayers money. What is the purpose and function of PWD? PWD should capable of performing effective road maintenance and repair.

That option was given to the government 24 months ago and yet to get a response from them. All the major roads from the Airport to west end dock on Tortola and gun creek to the baths on VG to start. And it wasn't costing the government a dime from the treasury.

Does not even make sense to announce these things. It is Ashley and only Ashley Alone. Social Security is James Todman and James Todman Alone. Just agree give them the money move on.
