LONG SWAMP, Tortola, VI – The Government of the Virgin Islands inked a contract valued $511,786 for works on the Long Swamp Pump Station, in a contract signing ceremony on June 27, 2023, with BioSafe Treatment and Septic Solution.

Minister for Communication and Works, Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) said the signing of the contract signals the clear intent by the Government of the Virgin Islands to complete the East End/Long Look Sewage Project.

“I would like to offer my congratulations to Mr Patrick Mitchell of Biosafe Treatment and Septic Solution and his team for being awarded the Contract for the construction of the inspection chamber, wet wells and procurement and installation of pumps and mechanical components for the Long Swamp Pump Station in the amount of $511,786.97.”

The Works Minister added that the government is also anticipating another contract for the repair of the Paraquita Bay Waste Water Treatment Plant and the construction of a sludge treatment facility, including more tenders for works to come.

Hon Rymer said the scope of work for the BioSafe contract will include the installation of client-supply concrete wet well segments, including lifting into place the wet wells and sealing the segments when fitted into place.

The contract also includes procurement, installation, and commissioning of a pump system with electrical panels included in all pumping and electrical works.

Gov't determined to improve local infrastructure - Premier Wheatley

The contractor will also handle procurement and installation of the piping system, including all mechanical components and provisioning of fence, fencing, gates, and generator, along with the construction of generator base and electrical panel housing.

Meanwhile, Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) said his administration is determined to "clean up the mess" in the VI, with a further determination to make significant improvements to the local infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Contractor Mr Mitchell of BioSafe Treatment and Septic Solution said he remains grateful for the contract for the project and called for the Government to start an education programme regarding what his company will do in East End and how sewage can be processed.

He remarked that for existing businesses, when the project is completed, the sewage system should be void of grease and toxic agents and called for the use of biodegradable detergents by laundromats and more collaboration with restaurants on the proper disposal of waste oil.

    No local contractors available?
But when I advertise a position at my small business, the same government says I have to hire BVI and Belonger first.
Government don’t have to abide by its own rules?

This is all good intentions but with the specific requirements for this system to function at its best, those using it must be diligent with what is released into it. We are not properly educated on what we need to do which will backfire (no pun intended), and the system will malfunction soon enough. We are putting the cart before the horse. We can’t even discipline ourselves to shy away from plastics and how many of us are doing our part with recycling? It’s a total mindset change needed for our country to move forward with our ecosystem.
