ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Works Minister Hon. Mark H. Vanterpool said the National Democratic Party (NDP) government inherited the Territory’s sewage problem and noted that his government is determined to make significant progress towards finding a remedy.

Government signed a contract with Gene Hodge Backoe, Bulldozer & Trucking Co. Ltd., yesterday, May 20, 2014 which Hon Vanterpool said represents a further commitment by his Government to fix the Territory’s sewage problem.

The company submitted a proposal in the amount of $1.3M on July 30, 2013, for the Road Town Sewerage System Pipeline Replacement, and this bid was accepted over several others.

“As a Government we inherited the sewage problem that has plagued this Territory for many years,” Hon. Vanterpool stated, “but we are determined to make significant progress to remedy this problem of raw sewage running through the streets creating an unsanitary situation for residents and visitors.”

According to the Scope of Works, the contractor is required to install sewer pipelines, between the main pump station at the Road Town round-a-about, technically referred to as Manhole # JB-E2, to Nibbs Street at the Cut-lass Tower, also referred to as Manhole # MH-4D; and also to remedy any defects. This project is expected to be completed in approximately ten (10) weeks.

He added that other works on the Road Town Sewerage Project are expected to commence this Saturday and be completed within 3 weeks, through a series of petty contracts.

“We now, no longer, have raw sewage running on the main road next to the Immigration and Labour Department, as was the case before, and motorists and pedestrians can manoeuvre the area, in safety” the Works Minister said. “We now, no longer, have that foul smell in the area, which was unhealthy, and residents and visitors can now enjoy a more pleasant sojourn, in the capital City of Road Town.”

He added, “Obviously, this is because our Government moved swiftly, to repair the Road Town Pump Station, as a temporary fix, and took on some other remedial works.”

What is mr hodge's track record? I know he has a track record on the AO shirley recreation ground (either 200 or 400 meters years ago) but not one with sewage.

Maybe instead of many outsiders of the VIP there making phone calls trying to influence the outcome of the VIP elections they should be concerned with their own internal issues and fights!

I wish our politicians, including NDP PEP and VIP, would follow the POPE's example and put more focus on honest actions, understanding, and compassion
