NANNY CAY, VI- After being cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2022 BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival returned for the 49th edition on March 30-April 3, 2022.

Some fifty-eight boats competed in 11 divisions and saw a large gathering of persons for the presentation ceremony and after party at Nanny Cay.

The organisors and participants have since been hailed by the Government of the Virgin Islands for helping to pull of yet another successful staging of the internationally recognised event.

It is evident that the hard work of Judy Petz and her team, coupled with the overwhelming support from the number of entries, continues to reap great rewards for our tourism product and in particular our yachting sector,” Junior Minister for Tourism Hon Sharie B. de Castro (AL) stated on April 3, 2022.

Progress seen despite challenges- Hon de Castro

According to Hon de Castro, despite the challenges, this year proved to be another record year with an exceptional number of some 58 yachts from around the world participating in this prestigious event.

I would like to specifically recognise Dr Robin Tattersall OBE, who even in his 90’s continues to participate and won in his category. You are truly an inspiration! Special congratulations to all the other winners as well!

To the organisers, supporters and sponsors of the BVI Spring Regatta, I wish you much success going forward and I join in anticipation of future races and fair winds for the 50th year! #BVILOVE.” Hon de Castro stated.

‘We’re getting there’- Premier Fahie

Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) commented on his Facebook page that the annual BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival was able to return this year due to Government’s successful efforts to diminish the effects of COVID-19 in the VI.

“Thanks BVI!!! Our efforts to mitigate against Covid-19 as best as was and is possible since March 2020 have allowed our Positive Active cases to be significantly low thereby allowing events such as but not limited to the Spring Regatta to return to the shores of the BVI,” Premier Fahie said on April 3, 2022.

The Premier added, “We welcome back the 2022 Spring Regatta. We're getting there. To God alone be all the GLORY.”

Minster for Health and Social Development Hon Carvin Malone on March  3, 2022, said the territory is on ‘its way back to’ normality should citizens continue to take up COVID-19 vaccination and booster shots as well as follow the local COVID-19 health protocols.

The Minister said that the VI was on “its way back’ and we would like to thank you very much for all that you have done and all that you continue to do to keep the Virgin Islands safe,” he said.

Many congratulations to the BVI Spring Regatta Committee, the Royal BVI Yacht Club, Nanny Cay, all companies and volunteers that supported the return of this prestigious event. I am only sorry that this year, waiting for an operation, I couldn’t come and enjoy the atmosphere. Well done to all.

We won’t be back next year. Too much stress with all these customs requirements. We don’t have this in other places on the regatta circuit.

All a facade by the gov’t once again. Many more entries in the regatta which would have brought more $$$ to your economy but because of your money grab scheme with compliance, boats had to bail out. Good job BVI.

Please explain Mr Premier the drop in yacht entries from 80 entries on 16 March to only 58 by 31 March. Also please explain why the Moorings catamarans used by the BVISR Race Committee were not available this year. One thing for sure is that the BVI lost visitor money and local votes this year after the 16 March charter yacht detentions by Customs.

Interesting, the outrage over yachts being held accountable for safety procedures that are now being enforced, warnings that have been mostly ignored. Mooring yachts owners pay a premium to have their boats services and in compliance with all BVI marine laws.

I did not hear this outrage when drunk sailors savagely killed Frandie Martin and sailed away. Sorry for the inconvenience of having you follow the boating rules and laws of the BVI.

Your silence and indifference towards an accident that killed A son, husband, and father has not gone unnoticed.

The regatta was great and a high point for the BVI marine industry and a boost for our tourism.
