ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) said the Virgin Islands (VI) will be administering its COVID-19 vaccination policy with a focus on the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The Health Minister made the announcement on December 17, 2020, during a COVID-19 update to the territory where he assured that the Ministry of Health and its stakeholders will immediately begin the mammoth task of planning for the introduction of the vaccine in the Territory.

“Given the lack of access to the BVI by direct flights and consequent transit times together with the specific cold chain requirements, efforts will focus on the AstraZeneca vaccine which is compatible with our current cold chain and logistics for management of vaccines through the Territory’s expanded programme of immunization,” Hon Malone said.

“This will include the involvement of multiple stakeholders from the public, private, and non-government sectors coupled with a significant health promotion effort.”

Gov’t aware of myths surrounding vaccination – Hon Malone

He said, however, that authorities are also well aware that there are many misconceptions, myths and untruths surrounding COVID-19 vaccination, all of which will need to be addressed in the coming months.

Further, Hon Malone said that the Health Ministry has signed on to the WHO GAVI Covax initiative which gives eligible countries access to COVID-19 vaccines, in addition to UK commitment to provide the territory with access to more COVID-19 vaccines.

“The public can rest assured that the vaccine will be offered on a voluntary basis with best efforts to provide adequate information for persons seeking vaccination.  As we advance our plans more information will be forthcoming to the public with regards to COVID-19 vaccination,” Hon Malone said.

If people can consult and use obeah so freely here, especially marginally effective spells, then COVID shots should be a breeze to take.

Yes Malone we are awhere of the myths that's why we are not taking it just to be on the safe side.

This may be the easiest to store, but isn't also the cheapest and least effective vaccine available?
    • Realist (19/12/2020, 16:00) Like (3) Dislike (2) Reply
It has a 90% effective rate when administered in two doses

It demonstrates 90% immunisation levels when administered in the recommended split dose. With respect to cost, why would you pay more just to line a US pharmaceutical company’s pockets?

They've said the 90% was in a UK subset and they still aren't sure why those figures were so high. Here's my source: https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2020/12/phase-3-trials-show-astrazeneca-covid-vaccine-has-90-efficacy

"Sixty-nine participants in the UK weekly 6,638-person COVID-19 testing group were infected with asymptomatic COVID-19, including 29 of 3,288 (0.9%) in the vaccine group and 40 of 3,350 (1.2%) in the control group, translating to a 27% vaccine effectiveness against asymptomatic spread.

Of the group receiving an initial half-dose of COVID-19 vaccine, 7 of 1,120 (0.6%) participants in the vaccine group and 17 of 1,127 participants (1.5%) in the control group had asymptomatic infections, equating to a vaccine effectiveness against asymptomatic spread of 59%. In those who received two standard doses, 22 of 2,168 participants (1%) in the vaccine group and 23 of 2,223 in the control group (1%) had asymptomatic infection, indicating a 4% vaccine effectiveness against asymptomatic spread."

"AstraZeneca attributed the surprise deviation in trial dosing (ie, the half-dose/standard dose regimen) in the 1,367-participant subset to a manufacturing error in the quantification methods used between batches, resulting in some vials having 50% less vaccine than the others.

Why this regimen would be much more effective than the intended dose has not been explained, although the researchers have theorized that the lower first dose more closely mimicked that of an infection, while other experts saying that it could have been the result of the different size and type of participants in the subgroup.

The subset receiving the lower first dose didn't include participants older than 55 years—who tend to mount a weaker immune response than their younger counterparts—because the different dosage was given early in the trial, before older adults were recruited."

AstraZeneca is only 70% effective, storage and price should not be the concern but the efficacy matters and AstraZeneca is not approved yet!
  • Ghost (19/12/2020, 14:11) Like (14) Dislike (3) Reply
I understand re: storing of the vaccine but studies have shown that this astra Zeneca vaccine has only proven to be 75% effective .. why not try to source the Moderna vaccine as well which has been proven to be 95% effective?..also the moderna vaccine does not need special refrigeration like the Pfizer vaccine..

Now you prove we r lab rabbits! Why UK uses Pfizer, Moderna vaccines and cheap low efficacy AstraZeneca for Caribbean and some poor Asian countries? If temperature is an issue you could go for Moderna, it doesn’t require lowest temperature .In BVI people should have access to which ever they need! If you go for AstraZeneca, you are useless !

The AstraZeneca vaccine, when approved, will be used in the UK first and will be the preferred vaccine there because of the storage and costs issues with the Pfizer vaccine. It’s dangerous and ignorant misinformation to suggest it will be used only in Caribbean and Asian countries. Remember also it is the Pfizer vaccine which is experimental in that it is the first vaccine to use the new RNA technique which has not previously been used in vaccinations. AstraZeneca is a conventional vaccine of the same sort that has been used since the time of Lister and continues to be used successfully to immunise against childhood illnesses such as measles amongst other things.

Government looking for free supply ???Even UK people are not taking AstraZeneca vaccine Because of its least efficacy (70%).. why dont you have option for Moderna vaccine with 95% efficacy and better storage option?
    • Realist (19/12/2020, 16:02) Like (1) Dislike (2) Reply
It’s not available in the UK which is why people are not taking it. The AstraZeneca vaccine has 90% effectivity, is the cheapest option and desires no special storage conditions.

UK they could wait until AstraZeneca is available, all whites take Moderna and Pfizer and cheap AstraZeneca for us the black, you shi.....holes!

This is dangerous nonsense. The imperative is to start immunisation urgently and because Pfizer was the first to complete its testing and therefore first to be licensed it is being deployed urgently. The AstaZeneca vaccine is just behind and expected to be licensed in the UK this week following which it will be distributed across the UK and used across the UK population, whatever their skin colour or ethnic origin.

The Astra Zeneca vaccine is the safest as it’s using proven technology that’s been around for tens of years, the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are both new technologies that have not been out there long enough to see how the react long term. The Astra Zeneca vaccine is also 90% effective if the first dose is a 50% amount.

@Common sense: AstraZeneca technology is an out dated old technology, and it act on DNA to produce necessary MRNA, your gene is at risk if you use your common sense

    Myths
No myths because clearly vaccines made in months.

My news comes from asian TV. The american news is lie and corrupt,,,, This is what the honest doctor said. *Smoking is the best prevention and healing for the virus, especially marijuana because smoking keeps the nostrils, mouth and throat warm it kills the virus because the virus can Mature and live in consistent heat but the smoking of marijuana is best because marijuana has anti inflammatory and bacteria elements but they WHO and Scientist afraid to promote this method because it will promote and increase smoking*,,,, ,,, It's not beneficial to the Billionaires and trillion dollars pharmaceutical companies that are going to make billions off of Vaccine,,,,,,,, Be the Judge, make your pick,,,,, Vaccine or marijuana,,,,

As we all know, the world’s leading medical authorities get their news from asian TV....NOT....warm and moist is what the virus seeks, so on that basis, smoking is ill-advised...anti inflammatory agents work after the fact...anti bacterials do not work against virus...but for sure many news media outlets have biases...you pick through those by using a technique that seems to have been forgotten. It’s called critical thinking...

All you doctors and epdimologists blogging here, I thought youwould all be to busy?

As an economist let me inform you about Astra Zeneca the cost is so low as they are not making any profit from any of the vaccine, the charge only covers their costs nothing more.
    • Really? (21/12/2020, 07:34) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply
As an economist, you would also presumably know that cost to produce and price are different things. I believe AZ has stated that they do not intend to profit from the pandemic, hence they have decided to set price at cost to produce at this time. That said, their cost does not reflect efficacy.
