ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The Government of the Virgin Islands has successfully negotiated to make lands available for the separation of the Bregado Flax Educational Centre primary and secondary division.

This is according to a government release which stated that Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration, Honorable Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) stated that following the approval by the Cabinet of the Virgin Islands, a decision was made to exchange lands belonging to landowner Christina Yates to allow for the construction of a new school.

As such, Ms Yates will receive lands at the Leverick’s Bay area owned by the Government with the Minister stating that there was a need for the separation of the primary and secondary schools for more than thirty years.

“It is hoped that once lands are successfully transferred, construction of the new school will be underway soon,” the Minister said.

Land exchange 'a notable development' - Hon Malone

“This is a notable development which advances the separation of the Bregado Flax primary and secondary schools, which will ultimately facilitate more effective learning for students in the primary and secondary division.”

Commenting on the exchange, Landowner Ms Yates said she was delighted to be able to assist with the improvement of education in the Virgin Gorda community and being able to develop the tourism product in the North Sound area.

“I am happy that the Bregado Flax Educational Centre will have lands necessary to further cater to the needs of the youth in the community. I am also equally pleased that I can now develop the tourism product for the North Sound community. Sam Leonard and I set out on this journey years ago, and it is fulfilling to be able to see our dreams come to fruition.”

The parcel in the land exchange is owned by the Crown in the Leverick Bay area and measures 1 acre. The parcel of land owned by Christina Yates, is land at Black Witch Hole which measures 2.8 acres with the lands involved in the exchange are said to be of comparable value.

It's a win win situation yes YATES will turn that acre into multiple millions but education is key to be able to reach those millions in life. This exchange in my opinion is a plus for our society today. Separation of the school is key to conducive learning. Long awaiting this move nothing happens before it's time. Thank you for that move on both sides. Let's not make it a political move but a great strategic move for the betterment of our people. This is talking season. Claps the YATES claps for the government.

This exchange happened very early in this government’s administration. They’re only now bringing it to the public. Don’t be fooled, trust me.

This was done in favor for ***es. He has been trying to making that exchange for YEARS. The location is NOT appropriate for a primary school as it is smack dab in between two homes with one narrow road to get there. Smh

@hm smack dab between 2 houses nothing is wrong with that. We will buy them out and relocated them same way. Negotiations between both parties could be ongoing and we don't know. The school is needed no doubt about it. If the houses had belonged to me I'm sure I would have done something like this. Development is needed and we must look beyond what the country can give to us but rather what we can give to our country. Exchange for proper value of our mental, physical, emotional, psychological and social been is paramount.

How dissatisfied our people are. Here we have someone who has the interest of the development of education in the country, and exchanged his land to build a school in order to EDUCATE the children and some people are looking at the value of the land.
Education is priceless because we are educating our children for a lifetime that worth millions of dollars.
