BEEF ISLAND, VI – The Government of the Virgin Islands (VI) is investing in a 40-bed field hospital should local COVID-19 cases spike again, Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) has announced.

The minister revealed the plans during the October 7, 2021, receipt of a new shipment of 2000 AstraZeneca vaccines from the UK.

In addition to ordering new cold storage facilities for the Pfizer vaccines, the minister said an expanded COVID-19 ward and field hospital will also come for 2021, with assistance from the UK.

“We would also like the public to know, we're placing orders for field hospitals, a 40-bed field hospital. We think that this is critical because we must continue to invest so that if there are any likelihood of any spikes, whether by hospitalisation or otherwise, we will be prepared,” he said.

VI assisted St. Lucia with COVID-19 laboratory analysis

The Minister announced that the territory was also able to assist St Lucia with 1066 clinical laboratory analysis as a testament to VI’s capabilities due to its investments in lab technology to test COVID-19 samples.

“This goes to prove that our investment in the laboratory facilities or are now able to not only assist us but assist other island nations,” he said.

Hon Malone also revealed that the government is getting ready to open its expanded COVID-19 ward at Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital, which came through UK assistance.

“By doing this together… we would be able to ready yourselves for when the cruise ship is coming, for when the hoteliers began to fill their room, for when we have the yachting industry fully opened.”

There could easily be a new COVID variant that the current vaccines won't work against. Basically this is very good planning.

This should have been done an entire year ago instead of picking a fight with the Governor and the UK!

Aren't we a little late for this, the spike already occured and alot more have been vaccinated so what spike are we talking about again?

Show some leadership and mandate vaccination for front line workers, anyone in contact with tourists etc and then this won’t be necessary. Stop trying to appease a small section of the voters.

The whole thing makes no sense to me. Why is this man holding a HEALTH MINISTER PORTFOLIO WHEN HE HAVE NO MEDICAL CREDENTIALS OR MEDICAL TRAINING. HELP US ALL UNIVERSE BECAUSE WE NOT KNOW ANY BETTER. Why is a field hospital being set up unless there is something going on that we the pubic don’t know
Until things hit the fan and then they start the flip flopping scratching their heads WELLL ERRR, BLAH TO THE BLAH. AND WHO WANT TO DISAGREE WITH MY COMMENT, OH WELL, GO RIGHT AHEAD, YOU’LL CERTAINLY GET OVER IT.

I agree with you but they are to afraid to be true leaders and mandate. They are afraid to loose the voters they have in their pockets.

Covid-19 and its variants are far from over. Gatherings like the game you mentioned are possible beacause those in attendance have gotten their two jabs and can prove it. Since the BVI have a lot of ignorant people who don't want to get the vaccine, Government has to recurr to this; be prepared for a spike or worst. But, they should have done this earlier. In many European countries if you don't get the vaccines, you loose your job. As simple as that. You need to present your Health Pass to get access to many places like Shopping Malls, Cinemas, Restaurants and where many people gather. That is the way to protect its citizens because someone's rights end where someone else's commence. Instead of throwing money ways in consultancies and bogus stimulus, Government should invest in the Health Sector, Infrastructure and Education.

Yes, but they have a lot more people vaccinated than the BVI does. So get vaccinated people!

All of the people at the game is vaccinated. Here in the US, you cannot get into any sports event without proof of being vaccinated. Some businesses have signs posted, if you are not vaccinated, you are not permitted to enter.

"40 bed field Hospital in cash of next covid-19 virus spike." Hon. Carvin Malone, what make you so confident that we will need a forty-bed (40 bed) field hospital in the event of another covid-19 virus spike?
Where in the field will this hospital be place, Sir?
Are you suggesting that that the next covid-19 virus spike will be much deadlier, and that the current hospital will be far to small to deal with the large number of covid-19 virus disabled patients?
Do this government cabinet honestly, and seriously pray to God for guidance as to what to say and do?
Or has desperation set in to the point that you are not sure what to do?
While it sounds good like a go plan, if it really is, then government will need four field hospital rather than one. One large one on Tortola, one medium size one in Virgin Gorda, two small ones on Anegada, Jost Van Duke. You said field hospital, didn't you? Well, put them in the fields.
As I see it, you all need to be properly advised

Of course it will, people on this Island love to go in panic mode. What do he think people is going to think when they hear Field Hospital, for what reason. To my knowledge, Field Hospitals is set up for emergency purposes. Another wave of COVID worse than the last one is about to hit the BVI.
