GREAT HARBOUR, Jost van Dyke, VI – With the Virgin Islands (VI) recording just one death, that of a Filipino, early on in the territory's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) says the territory's extreme measure has worked to saved lives.

The Premier was at the time speaking at a public meeting on Jost van Dyke on Tuesday, October 22, 2020, where he pointed out that COVID-19 has impacted the globe, yet its effects were limited in the VI with good containment of the virus.

VI methods worked - Premier Fahie

"What the Virgin Islands has been able to do although we may disagree at times with the methodology on being able to contain the coronavirus, we must thank God and give our Minister of Health [Hon Carvin Malone(AL)] and our health officials a round of applause by no stretch of the imagination," the Premier said.

"I know we may disagree with the methodology, but one thing we will all agree with is that we all want to make sure that we are safe and that we all want to make sure that we are healthy," the Premier said.

He sad every measure the government has taken was based on protecting the people of the territory and putting the health needs of the population first.

"I am glad that the measures work, I know they work because we all are alive here and can attend this meeting, one you are alive it is a plus," he said.

No buckling to pressure - Premier Fahie

Meanwhile, regarding the new 7-day quarantine being proposed by the Health Ministry instead of the mandatory 14-days for visitors, the Premier said it is one that will come with greater risks.

He said the more days reduced from the quarantine time, the higher the percentage of having more persons landing in the VI.

The Premier also said that he will not buckle to pressure and make decisions that could endanger the VI population; however, he said the economic situation has caused his administration to prioritise funding.

Yes, Hon. Premier Andrew Fahie, the measures taken have save lives. Thanks to God. Thanks to the current Governor. Thanks to you and the other Ministers of you tesm. And thanks also to all who have worked toward the good outcome. However, speaking honestly, I and many others that favor life and health over money are deeply concerned, base on Covid-19 continue deadly effect on people in most countries of this world, and the fact that the planed to swing our borders and ports entry wide open at once, rather than two or three moves is highly risky. I hope you are right in your judgment.

    This is asinine
If you never go out on the street you will never get hit by a Buss, but is that really worth congratulating yourself?
You also never got to your job because you feared that bus, and so Now you live off your patents.
    Is that sustainable?
    Great leadership.

Amen!..First I want to say Thank you God for your Grace towards us as a people and Thanks for Giving Premier Fahie and his Administration wisdom to lead.. I would like to say Thank you Hon. Premier to you and your team and for not buckling under the pressure.. I do believe you were a man sent from God in this time to do what needed to be done for the Territory and May God Richly Bless you and your team..God “does” answer prayers.. the Borders being fully open is scary but God is More Than Able to keep us safe ..We just have to keep being faithful, praying and Trusting God; also we continue to do our part to keep ourselves and each other’s safe.. and to you taxi drivers I know how some of you operate when it comes to getting that money - over-crowding Your vehicles - we all have to live, but a dead man can’t spend money and it’s not worth putting our families and others at risk..

.How come the BVI is on all the Caribbean countries high risk list? and the BVI is not in the low risk Bubble.?...We did do a B -Plus Job, the one area we fail in is that we lock the place down too often for too long...and I am glad the Premier recognized that, it was too late, the bad news, the bad press, the bad information was already out there...So, start listening to the people, they love and care for this country just like you!!.

Yes indeed. I'm back in Texas and could not have imagined a better place on Earth to have waited out that virus than Tortola. Even though a bit tough on the economy, all are safe and healthy. And with your health you can make money. Great job Premier Fahie and thank you to my friends at Aroma, Deuces, and the sweet people of Tortola. Yours was the safest and most enjoyable harbor I could have been in in this storm. Stay positive y'all.
