- as Opposition Leader doubles down on asking governor to intervene in Bank of Asia matter
Although criticised for showing zero faith in local systems and procedures by stating he was asking the governor to investigate matters relating to the closure of the Bank of Asia (BVI) Ltd and government’s investment in it, the controversial Opposition Leader Hon Myron V. Walwyn (R6), right, has; nevertheless, reportedly gone ahead and officially written his request to Governor Daniel Pruce, left. Photo: GIS/File

BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- Although criticised for showing zero faith in local systems and procedures by stating he was asking the governor to investigate matters relating to the closure of the Bank of Asia (BVI) Ltd and government’s investment in it, the controversial Opposition Leader Hon Myron V. Walwyn (R6) has; nevertheless, reportedly gone ahead and officially written his request to Governor Daniel Pruce.

Many have called the move by Hon Walwyn hypocritical and self-serving, as it is the same Hon Walwyn who has in the past lambasted the governor and fiercely criticised legislators for seeking the help of the governor on various matters, including allegations of corruption.

And although Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has said he was requesting an internal audit regarding the deposit of $5 million of taxpayers money into Bank of Asia (BVI) Limited, the man who has aspirations to become Premier of the Virgin Islands, Hon Walwyn, does not have any confidence in local checks and balances systems.

Opposition Leader doubles down!

Nevertheless, commentator Mr Claude O. Skelton-Cline is hoping good sense will prevail and the governor will respect the territory’s institutions.

“I see that and understand that the Leader of the Opposition has officially written to the governor…I guess this is would be the formal way of asking for investigation into some matters.

“You know, and I stated my position on that, he has doubled down and is taking this next step. I trust that the governor in his wisdom on behalf of the institution of his office, namely the United Kingdom, will allow our systems and processes and procedures to first be exhausted,” Skelton-Cline stated on his show, Honestly Speaking, on ZBVI 780 AM on June 24, 2025.

According to the clergyman, once that is done, then the “next steps” can be taken if necessary, but he is hoping that  “some of this ambitious exuberance” by the Opposition Leader would be “tempered.”

Skelton-Cline previously urged citizens and politicians of the Virgin Islands to stop living in a sea of rumours and refrain from adding their opinions to the speculation regarding the Bank of Asia matter.

He emphasised the importance of allowing the VI’s systems and processes to work in order to distinguish between fact and fiction.

If, as alleged, senior member's of government are potentially involved in this matter, then it makes sense to enlist the support of parties who are uninvolved, which in this case is the UK Government. I respect the need for the BVI to try and solve matters for itself first, as this strengthens local capability, but they can't mark their own homework, not when so much public money is at risk.

The governor should also take into account what the people of the bvi want and most the regular people I discuss this topic with coworkers, neighbors etc seem to agree that an independent investigation is best for transparency and accountability. We like to protect and defend wrong doing and negligence here because of who did it; that’s why the place can’t get no better.

There maybe very little provided for the general public , but our government has well motivated and highly trained janitors in the records departments who will have thoroughly cleansed the shelves and computers of any useful information before any audit internal or independent will take place .
