Governor admits HMS Medway's return is against will of VI

- Premier Andrew A. Fahie was clear UK military support was not needed

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Following a decision to snub orders by the Premier, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) to deny a request to have a United Kingdom (UK) navy ship come to the Virgin Islands to assist with border security, Governor of the Virgin Islands, Mr Augustus J.U. Jaspert has admitted his decision may have gone against the will of the people wanting to handle their own affairs.

“I know that people want [the] BVI to be able to take care of its own affairs as much as possible. I understand and fully support this. Therefore, I am working to develop a package of support that will enhance our local capabilities and put in place more permanent surveillance systems to improve security and curb illegal smuggling,” he said.

VI Community & task force were consulted - Governor Jaspert

The Governor was at the time speaking in a Friday, September 25, 2020, statement where he also claimed the decision to snub the Premier came after his office listened to voices of not only in the Joint Task Force but also to those in the VI community.

It remains unclear if and when the Governor or his office had community consultations regarding his decision to have the UK navy ship return.

Further, in withholding full details of the security plan, “What I will say, for now, is that we need to send a clear message to those involved in illegal activities and smuggling across our borders that it will not be tolerated. For every illegal landing on our shore, the risk of COVID-19 re-infecting our community returns.”

He said the return of HMS Medway and the security support from the UK will send a clear message of the UK’s unwavering commitment to the people of the VI and building capability of the Territory for the future.

UK military presence not needed – Premier Fahie

“This support will be fully funded by the UK Government, and contributes to ongoing efforts by our regional and international partners to tackle smuggling in this region,” Governor Jaspert said.

Premier Fahie in August 2020 had declined the offer, while noting that UK military presence was needed in the Territory and that the Virgin Islands can handle its current border security issues.

The heavyhandedness of the Governor comes at a time when the Virgin Islands prepares for Constitutional Review and seeks to have more autonomy.

If we had open our borders early August in a control way with a good plan when we had the virus under control we wouldn't had this fight this conversation. People would come legally and have to follow the process the safety protocol.....No one would have no need to smuggle in hence bringing the virus with them...

Are you actually naive enough to think that these people would not have smuggled in had the borders been open???

If the government had done its job and protected the borders in the first place, Gus wouldn't need to call in reinforcement. The Premier should have swallowed his pride and acceptes help when it was offered before. The only ones complaining now are those that are worried that they will lose money from drug runs and people smuggling.

Let the man do his Job., Security is his rolll...Focus on your Roll, get your border opening plan to the people,. Use your time and energy figuring out how to revive the economy, not to fight...When People focus on their roll things progress in a peaceful and properous manner....Nov 1st is a much better time to open borders than December.. Covid aint going no where a good entry, reentry plan will keep covid out...U say we have 2 months to prepare, lets use one month to test your plan, Even if we open to OECS countries first for that November month, Use that month to fix, adjust, redoe, if, and when issues arise, so by Dec 1st, when we open up to Int'l travel we have a plan that tested, proven and ready for the rush...I'm not educated, I'm just a common sense objective thinking person....

The question nobody is asking is WHY do we not have RADAR on our borders which are so poreous to drug dealers, money laundering, human traffiking , why in a country so rich have we never protected our waterways. Answer that question both Governor and Government

GOOD! You cannot put a boy to do a man's job!! They are the ones that starting talking about smuggling caused COVID etc. so now deal with the consequences. It pays to think about ALL outcomes rather than being short-sighted, deal with it now.

I will continue to give our Premier my full support for the manner he has charted the course for the protection of the territory. If there were not some dishonest and greedy persons in our midst who violated the curfew protocols, the situation in the territory would have been better. We are our own enemies by destroying the gains that were made to combat the COVID-19 virus.

While England is trying to test its strength and giving us support to combat the virus, I do hope that there is no ulterior motives in store. I would strongly appreciate if England could assist us by providing scholarships for our young people in order for them to develop their educational needs.

Job #1 of the VI government and other government is to protect the public. And protecting the border is protecting the public, The question is the VIP government leaving the border unprotected? Is the border leaking like a sieve? Was the VIP holding UK naval ship offer in abeyance a disastrous move?

Moreover, the VI has a power sharing arrangement between the Governor, the crown rep, and the local government. However, the Governor currently has too much power (Reserve) to easily thwart the will of the people’s duly elected government to change decision(s) he/she does not like or prefer. The last two governors have used this power to thwart the will of the people’s duly elected government, embarrassing the local government. A constitutional change is needed to restructure the process to limit the Governor’s reserve power among other things. The UK who Governor Jaspert is representing is a representative democracy that abides by the will of the majority of people yet Governor Jaspert is in the VI thwarting the will of people’s duly elected government. A simple majority of UK people voted to exit the EU and the will of the majority who voted is being adhered to. If abiding to the will of the people is good for and practice by the UK, it should be the practice in VI.

On another note, border protection not withstanding, this sudden action by Gov AJU Jaspert was intended to distract from the despicable reparation comment, IMO.

The Right Honourable Ralph T Oneal was the last positive thinking leader of Government Business in our Territory: The last administration and current administration appears to be very hotheaded. Under Hon Oneal you never knew we had a governor in terms of the sudden heated war-of-words between our elected and uk representative it all began when NDP refused to swearing the new Governor( Gus) as the people of the Virgin Islands traditionally did: the place is now filled with stupid confusion; do we need another power struggle because only our people will suffer others will simply book flights and depart BVI: Hon Ralph was able to leave little Road Town went to London Town thereafter our people were able to travel to the UK with Virgin Islands Passports and function freely: after all that tuff talk the queen's boat out in road harbour; the elected could have been upfull enough and asked for 2 more vessels but we done cuss of the people: that boat in this territory simply to prove a point to all who reside in this british overseas territory
