ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- In recent times, the Virgin Islands have witnessed a decline in certain crimes, with the overall crime rate decreasing by 22 percent. During a press conference on Thursday, May 7, 2026, United Kingdom-appointed Governor Daniel Pruce responded to media questions about the decline, stating that the territory has seen positive trends.

“Overall, for this quarter compared to last year, the overall crime trend is down by 22%, so that's quite a significant decline," he said.

Still growing concerns

Despite this decrease, he emphasised the importance of looking beyond the statistics to consider specific crimes.

He noted that there are growing concerns, particularly regarding domestic violence and sexual abuse, and he understands that actions are being taken to address these issues.

“Without in any way being complacent, because, obviously, you know, this environment is an unpredictable one, my sense is that the RVIPF is operating in ways which are enabling, effective responses and anticipation of criminal risk and reducing that,” Pruce stated.

RVIPF increased efforts in building capacity

Governor Pruce added that the increased visibility of patrols and traffic checks throughout the territory suggests that essential policing efforts are also underway that may not be as visible to the public.

“Obviously, the headline statistics look encouraging; without any of us becoming complacent, I think we should be welcoming that direction of travel," the governor said.

He recognised the RVIPF's efforts in building capacity to tackle crime in the territory. “I pay enormous tribute to the officers in the RVIPF who are embracing that transformation, extremely positively and productively. So I think the signs are extremely positive. We obviously keep monitoring the situation.”

“We keep looking to the RVIPF to do all it can to keep us all safe and responding effectively to what is an increasingly complex criminal environment,: he further stated.

Holding middle management accountable is key. That's the top cop Job, put things in place and holding middle management accountable for successful implementation. That's where local top cops failed.

When are the unsolved murders going to be solved? Now that crime has declined there is more time to pay attention to ALL the unsolved murders. It is high time families get closure for lost of family members.

This governor is playing semantics with the people of the Virgin Islands. He knows fully well those stats are skewed but he is reporting the nonsense anyway to satisfy JOHN BULL TO FURTHER FIS AGENDA TO SIDELINE AND DISRESPECT LOCAL OFFICERS AND PROGRESSIVE EXPAT OFFICERS. Time for a Governor change at any rate.
