Gov Pruce welcomes VI's willingness to accommodate same-sex couples
The issue of same-sex marriage will be brought up during constitution negotiations with the United Kingdom, beginning in July. Premier Wheatley, who will lead the VI’s delegation, revealed that while same-sex marriage is not accepted in the Virgin Islands, the current constitution does not discriminate against same-sex couples.
He explained that civil partnership recognition for same-sex couples in the VI is being considered, which would clear the path for social security benefits and inheritance to be granted to surviving partners.
Approach conversation with respect, compassion & understanding- Gov. Pruce
In a statement on Monday, June 22, 2026, Governor Pruce wrote, “This issue is about complying with international law, about upholding the constitution, and most importantly, about respecting the rights of all, regardless of sexual orientation.”
He added that he is aware this is an issue on which people hold strong and deeply felt views, adding, “However, I encourage everyone to approach this conversation with respect, compassion and an understanding that behind this issue are real people and families - fellow members of our community.”
Looking forward to further engagement
Governor Pruce said the VI has long been a community built on mutual respect, tolerance and the rule of law, and it is important that, as this debate continues, it reflects those values.
He said no one should face discrimination or hostility because of who they are or who they love.
“I look forward to engaging further with the Government of the Virgin Islands on this important issue, and my Office stands ready to support timely progress to update the law so that it upholds human rights and reflects the Constitution's protections for all.”
