LONDON, United Kingdom- Governor Daniel Pruce will once again miss the Virgin Islands Emancipation celebrations, making it at least three years in a row that a United Kingdom-appointed governor would be absent from the territory during this significant period in the Virgin Islands (VI).

Out of the territory since June 2025, Governor Pruce was slated to return by August 2, 2025, however, he said his shoulder surgery performed in the UK is taking a little longer than expected to heal, and he will return to the VI by mid-August.

"I’ve been touched by the many kind messages and well-wishes I received ahead of my recent surgery. I’m pleased to share that the operation to repair my shoulder was successful. However, my recovery is taking a little longer than expected, and I now anticipate returning to the Virgin Islands in mid-August," Governor Pruce stated on the Governor's Office Facebook page today, August 1, 2025.

Governor's 'regret'

The Governor said this delay "unfortunately means" he will be unable to attend Emancipation Festival celebrations.

"I recognise the significance of this commemoration, and I regret not being able to mark it with you in person. I send my very best wishes to all those taking part in the celebrations. May they be joyful, safe, and a meaningful tribute to the history and spirit of the Virgin Islands. I look forward to returning soon."

Meanwhile, Governor Pruce said in his absence Mr David D. Archer, Jr will remain Acting Governor until 5 August 2025.

Mrs Rosalie Adams OBE will then be sworn in as Acting Governor from August 6–12, 2025.

You are not missing anything. This is the worst Festival ever. The rain should fall and wash away all the nastiness that is taking place.
