TRELLIS BAY, Beef Island, VI- It was this morning, Tuesday, April 29, 2025, that residents, visitors and staff of American Airlines (AA) were shocked at the alleged behaviour of the current United Kingdom (UK) appointed Governor of the Virgin Islands (VI), Mr Daniel Pruce.

Reports reaching our news centre from eyewitnesses, staff of AA,  and other persons familiar with the incident are that Governor Pruce arrived at the airport with his wife/partner, who was on an American Airlines standby flight, No. 4327, to Miami, Florida.

She must get on the plane or else?

When it became clear that his wife/partner would not make the list, the Governor reportedly became irritated and angry,  allegedly making demands of the AA staff. It is reported that Mr Pruce stood in the check-in line for over 20 minutes in an attempt to block other passengers from being processed.

It is alleged that at one point, a passenger made an attempt to get past the Governor, who was displaying rude and undiplomatic behaviour, and a physical altercation almost took place. It is unclear if Mr Pruce placed his hands on the passenger. It is believed that the passenger, an American, remained calm throughout the ordeal. A security detail from the Governor’s office was reported to have intervened in an attempt to lower tensions.

Reports are that Governor Pruce's wife/partner eventually made the flight; however, it is unclear whether it was because of the normal process or the Governor's alleged behaviour.

Attempts to get a comment from the Managing Director of the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA), Mr Kurt A.G. Menal, proved futile.

Governor's Office responds

A spokesperson from the Governor’s Office said:

There was a delay checking in the Governor’s wife for her flight this morning. The Governor was grateful for the airport counter staff’s efforts to successfully resolve this issue.

"During this delay, another passenger made a comment for which he subsequently apologised. The Governor accepted that apology.

Is Governor Pruce ethical?

Mr Pruce, who has become one of the most unpopular Governors, has blocked the appointment of a local Commissioner of Police (CoP) because it was alleged that no UK national was shortlisted. Many residents said his actions of stopping and then restarting the CoP application process lack integrity, transparency and good governance, something he has claimed he supports.

A report piloted by Governor Pruce to have a UK takeover (reporting to him) of the Customs, Immigration, His Majesty's Prison and the Financial Investigative Agency (FIA), has been rejected by all members of the House of Assembly and the people of the VI. However, Governor Pruce has ignored the wishes of the elected Parliament in a democracy and residents, going ahead and hiring a UK national already on the island to move forward with the takeover; another form of direct rule.

Currently, Governor Pruce is responsible for the police, which many said has failed under his leadership.

Furthermore, what makes you think you can get aggressive with another customer after holding up the damn line for foolishness? Nonsense!

Fight for what sovereignty? The UK said we can have it at any time, most people want it. We are cowardly, emotionally tethered to the UK, and prefer a custodial relationship with them in charge. Until we want that sovereignty, we will abide by their rules, which they may change anytime they wish.

No governor, minister or any VIP guest will EVER be standing in line at the counter. They are escorted to the VIP lounge where an airline official will take the passport(s), check the person(s) in at the counter and return with the boarding pass(es). That’s how it has been since the 80ies, when we only had a tiny lounge, but it gave the passengers their privacy. I have a hard time to believe this story

Reading most of these comments has really opened my eyes to the amount of hate towards the UK, and no matter what Governor is sitting.

My question is the person at the AA counter regardless the wife of the governor is on stand by, you should have made accommodation or offer some more assistance, this is our Governor. If you are a bornhere I am sure you want to enjoy the benefits of a UK passport, if you are a expat you will want your status here, who you think will assist you.

We are dependent on the UK, regardless it’s BRITISH Virgin Island, like it or not.

Now the government want to pass a law for expats to wait 30 years for belonger, totally ridiculous, by the time some people get that they are in their 60’s 70’s what can you expect then to do at that age, how can they now own land, or enjoy life.

What if the UK decides they are not giving us UK passport and decide to take that privilege away from us BVIslands, you will never hear the end of it.

    Do so don’t like so.

How long has it been since the COI and up to now the government, of the BVI Can’t get their act together, only making life in the BVI harder for people.

So much hate towards the UK, and the governor. I hope this is a wake up call, time for the UK take over this place. The BVI can be better but not with these greedy politicians at the helm, they are leading us into a reef and sucking the economy and wealth to enrich themselves.

A one track third world mentality, is what’s leading.
Governor let them know we need a break from these, small minded greedy politicians.

"Now the government want to pass a law for expats to wait 30 years for belonger, totally ridiculous". Belongership is not an (automatic) right, it is a privilege granted to a certain category of expats who have resided in the BVI for a period of time and have displayed a character which demonstrates that (1) they respect the BVI and its culture (2) they have contributed to the BVI and are willing to continue to do so and (3) they do not intend to ignore or trample on the rights of BVIslanders. Your statement reeks of entitlement. Please do us all a favour and go home; you do not have to wait for Belongership there. No one is forcing you to remain in the BVI. As per the article, the BVI has an operational airport.

"By the time some people get that they are in their 60's, 70's what can you expect then to do at that age, how can they now own land, or enjoy life." What say you about BVIslanders in this situation? Tell me when will BVIslanders on minimum wage and in the lower category of wages ever be able to own land and enjoy life? The BVI cannot permanently host the large number of expats that come to work; the BVI is not their home, they already have one. BVIslanders should not have to compete against a pool of expats, whose salaries are tripled and quadrupled theirs, to purchase property in their own home. When the BVI implements the cap on the length of work permits and/or the 5-year rotation it will be made clearer that expats who come to work in the BVI are only here on a temporary basis. At-large, ownership of land in the BVI are for persons who are BVIslanders/Belongers. I implore you to stop grumbling about our laws that seek to protect the interests of BVIslanders and return to your country of origin to purchase land.

The audacity of foreigners in the BVI is at an all-time high. Continually screaming xenophobia and throwing toys out of your pram in efforts to get your own way is not going to negatively impact our patriotism. I beg the politicians to continue publicly promoting the interests of BVIslanders because it appears that some still have not gotten the message.

Well said. I could give you a hug. I could not have said it better. It seems that everyone coming to the BVI for work has the expectation of Belongership. Well, well, this is not America. We are a very small country and you only have to go to most businesses to see why our childrenm, boys and girls are busy riding around the streets on motorcycles and doing other things not becoming of their heritage. We cannot accomodate everyone. Long ago, to get a job for more than a few years you needed to have a special skill, not just be able to pack a shelf or cashier at a local supermarket. Who are we building the BVI for? Please, everything is not about the American Dollar. You can always go home again. Lots of us go to America and come back home. Many, many of us, myself included. So you can go home again. It's okay. It won't kill you. I took a cut in pay. You can too.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone….airline travel these days is stressful and not a place to expect customer service when things go awry. If you travel enough, you will inevitably and regrettably have a bad day. You’ll have paid your money but nobody will care if you’re inconvenienced. We all could have retired long ago if every apology they mete was worth $ 1. It doesn’t excuse the behaviour but neither does it warrant ad hominem attacks. Or, is it that in the BVIs we have a newly found no tolerance for mistakes despite the many that BVI born and raised politicians have made over decades that have resulted in squandered millions of tax payer money?

Pruce is a big whale in a small pond. Pruce’s alleged behavior is not surprising, for WHITE colonialists feel superiority, entitled, privileged, etc. The wheels of colonialism is turning slowly but still turning. It is still demonstrating racial superiority, exclusionary. The ting dem tink de better than ve . And sum ah ve treat dem like god. We deserve the way they treat us..So he wife geh on the plane? If it were a black person who did not geh on the plane and threw a fit, dem rass would have been arrested. Which negro hot slaughtered so she could tendon de plane? Will this incident be reported to the FCO ( Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office)? Stop treating these ‘ backraws’ like God, Superior Beings. Stop putting dem on a pedestal..stop bending the knee, treating dem like King. Pruce is representing the King but he is not the King.. The monarchy started losing absolute power with the Magna Carta in 1215 under King John, the 1688 Glorious Revolution/Bloodless Revolution ( William of Orange and Queen Mary)., etc. The backsaws do things in the BVI they don’t do in the UK, eg, not assenting to bills passed by legislative body. Mount Olympus have absolute power. On paper, the BVI is self-governing. But it is self-governing in theory only. Fellow Virgin Islanders stop letting Mount Olympus treat us like slaves yet we bend in reverence to them as if they are some deity. Fix yourselves. Unite, unity is strength and power. It is time to shed the divide and rule conditioning. Stand up and take your rightful place. Make Dolph Faulkner, Noel Lloyd, Chris Fleming, etc proud.
