“Going green” but no action – Douglas Wheatley

- Talk Show host suggests VI should focus on Green Economy, linking agriculture with tourism
Host of local radio talk show, Speak Out BVI, Mr. Douglas Wheatley suggested that the VI retraces its steps and become a green economy.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Speaking on his local radio show on May 8, 2012, Douglas Wheatley suggested that the Virgin Islands (VI) should retrace its steps and become a ‘green economy’ while at the same time linking tourism with the agricultural industry.

Mr. Wheatley, host of ‘Speak Out BVI’, aired every Tuesday on a local radio station, stated that the Virgin Islands has always been talking about a green economy but takes no action.

“We were green a long time ago but we moved away from it and I think we are to retrace our steps and become a green economy.”

In giving an example, he spoke about the wastage of mangoes and coconuts in the Territory, and different ways these produces can be recycled and become a personal benefit to the individual and the economy on a whole.

“There are many coconut trees around, can we not harvest these trees? Isn’t there more that we can do?” he questioned.

The talk show host said the VI should get back to the land and harvesting in order to fasten the knot between tourism and the agricultural industry with the resuscitation of the agriculture industry.

He said by doing this “you don’t see agriculture as being separate and distinct from the tourism industry.”

According to Wheatley, the VI now has an excellent opportunity now that the world is in disarray, “for us to really put our foot down and do the things that made us successful in the past.”

Mr. Wheatley said that local farmers today are battling with produces from Puerto Rico, the United States, Dominican Republic and other territories, because they think that the VI is “unable to feed ourselves with our own resources.”

In speaking about the Greenhouses in Paraquita Bay and Virgin Gorda he said, “One would hope that money is being spent on them and perhaps with a little bit of ‘tweaking’ here and there, they should be up and running and doing something, because people have to eat and they will always have to consume.”

As we blog there is a workshop with tourism partners on Virgin Gorda put on by the Tourist Board about sustainable tourism and greening tourism properties. This cannot happen overnight. It is a process

Dougy is right. But we BVIslanders need to address why we are so AGAINST everything to do with our nature. What is our problem with understanding that these islands biggest economic asset is its nature? Is it because our ancestors had to work so damn hard in nature to find a meal that we want get as far away from nature as possible? Why this sickness that says BVI nature is disposable? I believe we are wilfully blind about this, but I trying to put a finger on why so many of us hate our natural environment and people who support it.
