HUNTUMS GHUT, Tortola, VI- Law professionals in the Virgin Islands (VI) have been urged to seek wisdom in their practice.

Law professionals in the Virgin Islands gathered for the Opening of the Law Year 2026 service at Shekinah House of Prayer Church of God of Prophecy on Monday, January 13, 2025.

During the teaching, ‘The Value of Wisdom’, Senior Pastor Da-Ana L.C. Samuel told the law practitioners, “You are where you are because God placed you there, and you have to recognise that. You did not get there on your own, I did not get here on my own, we didn’t get here on our own; God placed us here.”

Seek knowledge, understanding and wisdom

Pastor Samuel encouraged the law professionals to seek wisdom from God if they are lacking wisdom.

“It’s as simple as that…You are where you are because God placed you there, and you have to recognise that. You did not get there on your own.”

God, she said, has a reason and a plan for placing them there to “execute justice”.

Many times, our education, our knowledge, what we know, gets to our head, and we think that that’s all we need because we know it. We have this degree, we have that degree, we have experience, we have all of these accolades but Solomon recognised that I God I have the whole kingdom, but I still don’t know enough I dont have what it takes, when we recognise and undestand that in ourselves we are limited, you are limited, I am limited but God who is limitless not only in mercy, not only in compassion, but in knowledge…

She also shared that the more we put God in our business, the fewer mistakes we make.

Knowledge, understanding & wisdom

Pastor Samuel explained that wisdom, while the principal thing, should not be sought in isolation.

“So you have knowledge which is the facts, the content about any subject matter and then you have understanding which is the ability to compreend the facts or obedience…you need to add a third dimension to that…you need the wisdom of God which is the ability to take the knowledge and the understanding of the knowlegde that you have and apply it to any situation to arrive at the right, correct and moral answer. That’s what you need.”

She told them they need the wisdom of God when they get exhausted and overwhelmed to help them navigate through all of that

“As long as you seek the Lord, the Lord will give you success…make you prosper. As long as you put God first, the Lord will make everything you put your hand to succeed.”

The 2026 Law Year is being recognised by the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC) under the theme ‘The ECSC: Justice that Endures- Anchored in Independence, Strengthened through Trust’, focusing on the court's resilience, autonomy, and public confidence.

I swear all churches needs to be close down with the nonsense these Christians speak. Law is man made according to culture. Everyone is here through their parents, mostly favoring their mother for following through with pregnancy.

Your comment is quite vague, elaborate for the masses please, thank you. Yes, we are all here through our parents however, there’s an art in living correctly in order to have peace, success, good growth etc and some don’t know how too, so give some helpful tips like the Pastor. Additionally, we all have freedom to make choices however, the energy behind a choice matters more than the logic of the choice.

Back in the day, law was such a pristine, honorable profession in the BVI. Now it's an unruly, unethical industry practice by every cat and dog. A lot of people are going into medicine and law for the prestige, not for the proper use of the craft to help people.

It's all for the money and it shows. In BVI law, it is alleged if this money can't be made above the table, then deals are cut under. And if money can't be made by the client being defended, then it will be made behind their backs.

There are many good lawyers in the BVI that operates with integrity. They too are also human beings and make mistakes and each are tested from time to time, sometimes without even knowing. I see no wrong in Pastor D encouraging the professionals. How we ALL do things matter and there are consequences for our actions.

In 1991, in an attempt to secure access to my three children from a marriage to a prominent Virgin Island, I set down my experience of dealings with the legal profession. In a pamphlet titled Justice in Jeopardy, I wrote out of concern rather than malice.

My legitimate concerns were silenced by members of the British Virgin Island Bar Association. They threatened to “sue the shirt off my back” if the publication went to press. The end result was a court order banning the publication.

There are many amazing compassionate and hardworking lawyers in the BVI, and to those way say" THANK YOU". On the other hand I am perplexed by those who are in the profession for their own gain and have no regard for their clients needs, but insist on payment. There is a serious need for checks and balances in this profession as the lawyers who operate outside the best interest of their clients have no one to answer to. Why isn't there an independent board to review cases where clients can formally submit a complaint? Considering the fact some clients lives are in the hands of these lawyers hands, there should be a system in place to review the ethical, legal, and moral approach to cases where clients have questions. It is seriously unjust to the residents of the BVI, to pay huge amounts of money for a service they feel or can prove they did not receive. Checks and balances are needed as it would appear there are currently no tangible checks and balances. The Bar Association can not be the authority to oversea questionable actions by a fellow lawyer. This is where an independent board would come in with legal counsel to review cases/ complaints with resolutions to address the issues, even if that includes disbarring the lawyer/firm before the board. In 2026, something has to give for this once prestigious profession to regain its status. These degrees are not easy to obtain and should be used for the betterment of mankind, who pay dearly for the services. It should not ba a case where clients pay for services yet walk away feeling like their best interest was not a priority. Government officials, I beg of you, please address these concerns for the protection of all residents in the BVI, and for our future generations. The UK has an efficient model that can be adjusted for our needs. The unchecked balance of power in this profession is Totally unacceptable and it can only be addressed by the powers that be. God is a just God and He will see us through the necessary changes to right this wrong.

You might be on to something, but the fact is that most people who study law and become law makers, in this era, do not believe in God. Most of them are high ranking agents in other forms of services where they establish their own cultivated gods. To add most of them also only get into this type of business for two reasons and that is the prestige that comes with the titles and the money. Not really to help people. Now don't get me wrong there are a few who are still holding on to their human integrity, but majority of people who are in this field are dark.

All I'm concerned about in regards to Law and Justice in the Virgin Islands is that ALL Law Makers Act and be seen to be Acting, within the Legal Aspects of the Written Law at ALL Times. Be Brave.
