Global reggae icon Jimmy Cliff has died

KINGSTON, Jamaica- Jamaican reggae sensation Jimmy Cliff, born James Chambers, has died at the age of 81.

His wife, Latifa Chambers, announced the late icon's death on November 24, 2025, via an Instagram post signed by herself and their two children, Lilty and Aken, which read, “It’s with profound sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia.”

She thanked his family, friends, fellow artists and coworkers who shared his journey with him. 

“To all his fans around the world, please know that your support was his strength throughout his whole career,” the post added. 

Cliff was born in St James, Jamaica, in 1944 and began his music career in the 1960s. Known for hits such as You Can Get It If You Really Want (1970), I Can See Clearly Now (1972), and Wonderful World, Beautiful People (1969), Cliff was also an actor, starring in the 1972 crime drama The Harder They Come. 

He was also the recipient of the Jamaican Order of Merit. 

Tributes

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew M. Holness described the late Jimmy Cliff as a true cultural giant whose music carried the heart of Jamaica to the world. 

“Jimmy Cliff told our story with honesty and soul. His music lifted people through hard times, inspired generations, and helped to shape the global respect that Jamaican culture enjoys today,” Prime Minister Holness added. 

Cliff performed in the Virgin Islands during the BVI Music Festival many years ago.
