ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A late strike from Boris Giygax gave Leitsch City a 1-0 win over a Virgin Islands representative team yesterday Saturday August 3, 2013 on the A.O.Shirley Ground.

The game’s decisive moment came right at the end of regulation time and almost immediately after the Swiss ‘keeper, Matthias Gruber, had made an error that had nearly let Christian Javier in to score for the VI at the other end.

He was seemingly fouled by Michael Vock as he dribbled into the penalty area, but stayed on his feet trying to regain control of the ball. He should have gone down as he half stumbled half ran but couldn’t get enough balance to get a shot on target.

Minutes later, Giygax had no such trouble as he latched on to a loose ball inside the six yard box to fire home the games only goal. Dan Off took the free kick from out wide down the left hand flank and lofted a clever ball up and over the defensive wall and into the danger area between defense and the goal. Off challenged the VI ‘Keeper, Vesquever Frett, for the ball and under pressure Frett fumbled the ball allowing Giygax to score.

The win was no more than the boys from Switzerland deserved as the VI had been wasteful in front of goal in the first half and allowed Leitsch to dominate in midfield for most of the 2nd period.

In truth, there were few chances at either end and the win gave the Swiss some solace after their 3-0 defeat on Wednesday night in Virgin Gorda.

On that occasion, Troy Cesar, Thomas Albert and Joel Fahie were on the score sheet. However, on this occasion it didn’t look like any VI player would ever score. Javier had two of the clearest chances having come on as a second half substitute for Christopher Telemaque. The first, a tame shot straight at the keeper and the second the attempt just before Leitsch scored.

Valdo Andersen had also brought out a flying save from Gruber early in the second half and a smart move involving the same player who combined with Browne to split open the defense before Peters was a little slow to react at the far post with the goal begging. A couple of free kicks were curled goal ward, but with little danger and with one exception, the corners were dealt with by the tall Leitsch defenders and Gruber.

The first half started with Team VI in control and Andersen showing his attacking intent with a flying header just over the bar from Fitzroy Daley’s corner. Remo Guistler and Alen Bulji combined to give Frett a scare shortly afterwards and Andersen missed another half chance following a delicate cut back from the effervescent Jamie Brown down the VI right hand side.

Brown, himself, had a golden opportunity to score, outpacing the last defender and with just the keeper to beat sliced his shot across the face of goal with Telemaque just unable to apply a finishing touch at the far post.

That was pretty much as good as it got for the VI who found themselves in control defensively, but lacking a playmaker in midfield to ask the questions of the Leitsch defense or find the telling ball to unlock the door.

Andersen dropped too deep to collect the ball, Trevor Peters never got the type of ball to feet service he needed and when the high balls came over Vock and Giygax used their height advantage to clear the danger.

Guistler had a good game for the visitors and was a constant threat to Albert and Cesar with bustling runs and as Leitsch began to control the 2nd half he could have scored twice. Thilo Mangold also saw a shot blocked by the lunging boot of Albert and Simon Wahl had a good claim for a penalty waived away as he crashed to the ground following a clumsy challenge in the box.

Coach Lenroy Henry began to make a lot of changes to give the bench some playing time, which further unsettled the teams shape. The warning bells rang a little louder for the BVI defense when Guistler fed Wahl who thought he had scored only to be disallowed for offside and then 10 minutes later Giygax was onhand to deliver the coup de grace and give his team a deserved victory.
