ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Youth development in the Virgin Islands is critically important to improving the quality of life of all the young people; it is important for building a productive and sustainable Territory; and it is important for personal edification, self-growth and empowerment.

As such, Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn is reminding parents this holiday season to take the time and give their child the unforgettable gift of “support and encouragement in their personal aspirations.”

According to a press release from Government Information Service (GIS), the Minister’s statement comes under the heels of Ms. Melanie Amaro’s victory in becoming the first X-Factor, and winner of the $5M music recording contract.

According to Melanie’s mother, Mrs. Debra Amaro, in several interviews leading up to the show’s season finale, at a very early age she saw the potential in her daughter and always looked for opportunities to help her harness, showcase and strengthen her singing skills.

Minister Walwyn told the Department of Information and Public Relations, “Melanie’s story of a mother’s passion and vision to see a daughter succeed is an exemplary example of how support, encouragement and dedication to a child’s development could lead to new beginnings.” “Our children need our support and encouragement and they need us to help them see beyond the now,” he emphasised, adding, “Let us do that this Christmas; let us show our children that we care about their future and let us provide the avenues for them to reach their fullest potential.”
