ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Another showing of tremendous "Forward power" saw the BVI Select XV overwhelm George Washington State University Rugby Club 51-0 on Friday March 16th, 2012.

Played under the lights of the A.O. Shirley Ground, the game was illuminated by several more tries courtesy of the surging runs and dominating play of the VI marauding pack although it was a single handed effort from Jerome Springette that drew the cheers and ovation from the sizeable crowd.

Halfway through the second half the boys from Washington, down 32-0, had just broken up another attack and having won the loose ball were looking to set themselves up for a run at the VI Backs when Jerome Springette read the play, made an interception at full speed on the half way line, avoided two tackles, sidestepped another and bore down on the try line. His speed was enough to evade another despairing sliding tackle and he scored. “I couldn’t wait to score,” said Springette. “All I could think about was running for the line.”

Springette’s score made it 37-0 and capped a fine performance by him over the two game series in which he scored 3 tries overall.

Washington had promised to come hard at the VI following their 77-5 defeat in the first game, but it took the hosts all of 7 minutes to open the scoring when the tall Argentinean Fredrico Zicari burst through for a try.

Matthew Plimmer missed the attempted conversion, but made amends 12 minutes later when he was successful with his kick after Andre Adams scored the first of his two tries right under the posts.

The first half was rounded out by further scores from Johnny Bailey and Victor Franklyn to make it 22-0 at the break.

After the break and reveling in the space created Scrum Half Jimmy Peters and Bailey turned on a show for the home crowd. Peters in particular at the centre of all things creative “It was an enjoyable, good, game and I thoroughly enjoyed my role, especially in setting up the plays and letting the Forwards do their thing “They kept pushing and creating pressure and that was the key for us.”

Bailey, who was voted by many of his team as an un-official Man of the Match, also enjoyed his nights work “the games were a lot of fun and they certainly came back hard at us following Monday. It was a physical game with lots of good Tries and hopefully we have attracted some more people to the game”.

Second half tries were also scored by Donovan Staples and Ian James with two to leave the final score 51-0.

Coach Sam “Solo” Solomon, who is now on a run of 3 games undefeated with his team, admitted the game had been harder than the first encounter “We had a couple new players tonight,” he said, “so it took a little longer for us to settle, but once we did our Forwards once again proved they were too big and powerful for them to handle.

He certainly is not getting carried away with the score lines though and readily accepted there was still a long way to go before the VI can be regarded as serious player in the Caribbean “ Inside Centre Johnny Draper looked a good find with good hands, but we had a back line that was lucky to get away with going too flat a couple of times so we need to work on that and getting the ball out to the wings more consistently”

George Washington Uni. Player/ Coach Gordon Pera, who had to sit both games due to a broken nose, will be going home defeated but not deflated as he has no doubt his team will have learnt from the experience. “Each off season we try to go places and play teams that will challenge us and the BVI sure has!” adding “We never play teams this good up in Washington so we have learnt a lot. We will go home with lots of new strategies too!”

Those strategies might just have come from the influence of Ronan Kuczaj, who according to John Campbell and Joe Wilfcow, the joint Captains from Washington, taught them a lot about rucking “ He showed us a couple little tricks we haven’t seen before and will definitely be working on back home!”

As far as the overall trip, they described the VI as a paradise.
