Future of College Bakery in question!

- HLSCC President Dr. Karl Dawson confirms handing over management of bakery an option
Virgin Islands News Online has been informed by its ever vigilant team of reporters that the future of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) bakery is in question as several considerations are being made to maximise the profits of the entity, which includes handing it over to new management. The college Bursar had reported to the SFC in April that the bakery was a drain on the college. The Bakery for 2012 estimated expenses was 1.2 million dollars with income of only a mere $727, 000. ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Virgin Islands News Online has been informed by its ever vigilant team of reporters that the future of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) bakery in Road Town is in question as several considerations are being made to maximise the profits of the entity, which includes handing it over to new management.

This information follows the revelation before Standing Finance Committee earlier this year that both the college’s Cafeteria and the Road Town Bakery were a drain on the HLSCC’s resources.

It was stated that the Cafeteria’s projected 2012 revenue was $539,000 but expenses were projected to be $910,000. For the Road Town bakery, income was projected at $727,000 but expenses of 1.2 million dollars.

President of HLSCC Dr. Karl Dawson when contacted on the issue said “the matter is under consideration and we will make a public statement at an appropriate time.

He also noted that having new management for the bakery was one of the options being explored.

Virgin Islands News Online also spoke with a member of staff at the bakery, who confirmed that there were plans to have the college become a profitable entity and that new management was one of the options.

“I don’t think they will give it up totally because there are a lot of equipment here. I would suspect they could lease it to a private company to continue the bakery. But the college needs to make money,” the staff member said.

The news site was also informed that there have been talks that a local politician and businessman was interested in having his company manage the bakery, however, this could not be confirmed.

Territorial Member Archibald C. Christian, during Standing Finance Committee, had asked what were the plans for the cafeteria and bakery since they were running at a loss to which the Minister for Education and Culture Myron V. Walwyn told the HOA committee appointed to examine the 2012 draft Estimates that it will be worked out in-house and “it's good to have a Minister who has a background in food and beverage”.

while I like the idea of training students in a practical work, I personally never go into the bakery because I want to see better quality local baked goods from grandmother's recepie, not from americanized commercial mixes and short cuts. go more local with better quality ingredients (less sugar) and word will spread.

From the time HLSCC was given to Myron & that PS he has I know HLSCC would be going down hill. Can't fund the college but pumping millions of dollars in a Mickey Mouse Dock project, as Fahie said the eternity hospital project and this pet kederick airport expansion project for $300mil but can't properly fund HLSCC. NDP you make me shame!

Some of you sound so stupid. The dan place loosing $$$$ by the thousands and you all want government to contine funding it? That money can be going to some one of allu child education. If it was your business running at such a great loss every year, would you keep it in operation? I would lease out both the bakery and the cafeteria. For years both of them running at a loss...aint just now...

When I examine the behaviour of a number of these Ministers, one can understand the true meaning of their request for four more years. In four years, they will be in a position to retire for life.

The primitive behaviour can only be inexcusable if our greedy businessmen and politicians would truly love the country and not them pocket
