The fund, established with support from the United Kingdom government totalling $50,000.00, is designed to support projects in the Virgin Islands (VI) that promote youth empowerment and good governance, a press release from the Governor’s Office said.

Organisations or partnerships across organisations are welcomed to apply for funding for project up to $10,000.00.

Youth Empowerment & Good Governance Projects

Registered or established Non-profit Organisations or partnerships in the VI can apply for funding for youth empowerment projects geared at encouraging local youth between the ages of 13 to 21 years, to develop new skills or encourage pathways into future work in areas such as tourism, environment, agriculture, sports and other sectors relevant to the VI’s sustainable development, economic growth and overall wellbeing.

Meanwhile, VI Non-Profit Organisations, schools, and community groups with projects that encourage political accountability and good governance can apply for funding for their good governance projects.

Such projects can include citizen journalism initiatives, the promotion and development of media codes of conduct, transparency projects on how public money is spent and upskilling journalists or influencers who use their platforms to actively participate in the democratic system and hold leaders to account.

Good Governance Projects will contribute to the delivery of the Virgin Islands National Sustainable Development Plan goal: Islanders are empowered for a Sustainable Future in an Inclusive Vibrant Society, Living Fulfilling Lives.

Project partners can be included in more than one application, but there should only be one application per project lead.

Projects must be completed by March 2025

Applications will be reviewed by a review committee consisting of three representatives from the Governor’s Office and the government who will score the applications via the criteria.

Successful applicants will be notified by October 25, 2024 and projects must be completed by March 31, 2025.

Governor Daniel Pruce described the Future Fund as an important investment in the future growth of the VI.

“As I outlined in my swearing in speech, I am committed to supporting efforts to build a better future for the youth of the Virgin Islands. I encourage all those who are eligible to apply to please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity,” he added.

Who pays the salaries for tlhe police force, the room and bord forcthe prisoners.and security guards, the legal aid for those without the means...It seems to me that these areas are costly and the need/cost keeps rising.
Thec Bvi foots the bill solely? It appears that there is urgent need for an additional prison with the accompanying staff..How can it be possible for these BVI to afford this and most especially when even basic upkeep of these Islands falls short due to financial constraints.
