Following criticisms over media censorship as reported by Virgin Islands News Online (VINO), the BVI Financial Services Commission (FSC) has announced a reversal of its media censorship policy for the Meet the Regulator Forum slated for October 3, 2023. Photo: Internet Source
VINO had previously reported that after inviting the media to cover the event at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium, H Lavity Stoutt Community College in Paraquita Bay, the FSC sensationally informed that it will not allow still photography, video recording, streaming, or interviews of FSC personnel by the media at the forum. PASEA ESTATE, Tortola, VI – Following criticisms over media censorship as reported by Virgin Islands News Online (VINO), the BVI Financial Services Commission (FSC) has announced a reversal of its media censorship policy for the Meet the Regulator Forum slated for October 3, 2023.

In a new notice on Friday, September 29, 2023, however, Monique C. Hodge Public Relations Manager, Policy & External Relations Division at the FSC said further to our earlier invitation of the media, the invitation extends only to the Opening Address by Managing Director/CEO – Mr. Kenneth Baker.

Recording now allowed

“Please feel free to take a record (photographic and otherwise) of the M.D.’s address for your purposes.  Subsequent to the address, however, the Commission will move into the closed elements of the Forum”.

Ms Hodge added, however, that these subsequent agenda matters, unfortunately, will only be open to regulated entities.

Presenters at Meet the Regulators Forum are expected to immerse attendees in updates on trending issues and expected changes to the international and local financial services regulatory and legislative landscape.

The blue and white news site has to step it up. The layout is too confusing and does not incline you to read the articles.

Who is really running the Commission? This is very embarrassing.

Fact Check: Cherno Jallow heads up the policy, research, and external relations division at the Commission. However, he spends most of his time outside the territory serving on the Gambian Supreme Court https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherno_Jallow
while still earning his FULL salary, which I’m sure is a hefty amount. His Wikipedia doesn’t even mention that he is a current employee of the Commission. Why is this man being allowed these special privileges? Which local BVI Lander you know would be allowed to hold two full-time jobs in two different countries at the same time? This mess with the media is only the tip of the iceberg concerning the dysfunction inside the FSC. Lorna needs to get it together and investigate the management of the commission before they finish ruining the economy and territory.

@ Well Sah. The Financial Service is the breadbasket for the Territory and if you wish for it to be closed, we will have a severe loss in revenue and the entire country will be in economic chaos. What we should do as a people is to try our best to ensure that NO one tarnish the image of this reputable Commission. Sometimes we make statements without thinking and we speak emptiness into the wind.
