Francis Lettsome Primary School is 2023 Foreign Language Bowl winner

EAST END, Tortola, VI- Students from the Francis Lettsome Primary School have taken the winning spot in the Foreign Language Bowl 2023 for primary schools, an initiative by the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs, and Sports to introduce students to a second language, namely Spanish or French.

Education Minister Hon Sharie B. de Castro said the event held yesterday, May 3, 2023, was a success, with some 27 students partaking in the competition.

“The National Foreign Language Bowl (Primary) was a huge success today as we promoted Spanish as a second language in order to increase students’ fluency and diction in Spanish. The competition was open to students from Grades 4 - 6 from public and private primary schools. Twenty-seven (27) students took part in the competition,” Hon de Castro said in a social media post.

1, 2 & 3rd place winners  

With the help of Spanish teacher Mrs Solano-Thomas, students Sarai Bastardo, Ahmaya John, and Caedon Fraites were able to take 1st Place for the Francis Lettsome Primary School, with 2nd Place going to Robinson O'Neal Memorial Primary.

Students representing Robinson O'Neal Memorial Primary were Shadia Sanchez, Tylisha Isaac and Kayli Whyli.

And finally, Joyce Samuel Primary School came in third, with students Azariah DeSouza, Lia’Marie Todman and Jaylen Brewley.

Hon de Castro congratulated all the students, coaches, schools, and the Ministry for putting on the initiative. 

The decision to add foreign languages to the school’s curriculum came following calls for additional languages to be made mandatory in the VI school system.

    I am so proud of all the students who participated and their teachers and others who prepared them. Hon Decastro continue to do your best to continue to improve our education system. I know you can do it.

    So only when they are elected they can find themselves attending and taking pictures as if they so care. When they are out of office they dont attend no more nor be in picture taking again
