'Foxy' & Deanna Wattley give surprise performance at AMPS for Culture Week

BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- Prayers, songs and presentations were the order of this morning, November 11, 2013 when the Alexandrina Maduro Primary School (AMPS)in Baughers Bay opened Culture Week 2013.

The week, which officially began on Sunday November 10, 2013 continues all week with various activities happening at various primary schools and other entities across the territory.

Both Principal and teachers at AMPS welcomed well known Gospel artiste Deanna Wattley to lead the students in the singing of the Territorial Song, which was followed by the story of the song told by Kareem-Nelson Hull who helped write the now accepted Territorial Song.

The cultural flair for the morning was added by Philiciano "Foxy" Callwood OBE, who serenaded the students with several cultural ballads including "Island in the Sun".

The children swayed as he played and then asked questions after his performance.

"Why don't you wear shoes?" one student asked. To which be replied a with smile, "because this is how I feel more natural!"

Cultural activities planned at the school this week will include straw work,broom making, peppermint candy demonstrations, dancing with the BVI Heritage Dancers and a musical presentation from both the Lashing Dogs and Mrs. Arliene T. Penn.

Students and teachers will also receive prizes from LIME BVI for their participation in the school's daily cultural quiz.

Culture Week is observed in the Territory annually.
