Former VI Calypso Monarch 'King Henry' passes

SAN FERNANDO, Trinidad & Tobago- Former Calypso Monarch Ruben Henry, affectionately known as King Henry, who was well known in the Virgin Islands, especially Virgin Gorda, has passed.

.This esteemed veteran calypsonian passed away on the night of Sunday, July 20, 2025, at the San Fernando General Hospital in Trinidad and Tobago.

Having immersed himself in the rich cultural tapestry of the Virgin Islands for over 30 years, King Henry was more than just a musician; he was a vibrant force of creativity and celebration.

His captivating performances during carnivals in Trinidad were a highlight for many, with his iconic calypsos echoing throughout the islands.

Contributions to VI

His also made contributions to local festivals, such as the renowned Virgin Gorda Easter Festival and the Virgin Islands Emancipation Festival.

King Henry was a participant in calypso competitions, drawing large crowds eager to experience the magic of his artistry.

His dedication to his craft was recognized when he was crowned the Calypso Monarch at the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival in 2011.

In recent years, after decades of influencing the vibrant music scene in the VI, Henry returned to his homeland of Trinidad and Tobago, where he continued to share his passion for calypso.

According to statement from his son to the media, King Henry passed away on Sunday at approximately 7:45pm.

The funeral service foe the late calypsonian King Henry is scheduled for Wednesday, July 30, 2025, in Trinidad and Tobago.

Virgin Islands News Online would like to extend heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and fans of the late Ruben Henry, known to us all as King Henry.

His legacy will live on through his music and the memories he created.

    My Condolences to the Families of King Henry. He will definitely be missed. Was looking forward to seeing him again But I guess it wasn"t to be. King Henry was a well Respected Man in Virgin Gorda. He was Loved by ALL. Very helpful Man.
    He was also a Professional Mason by Trade. He was very instrumental in the Construction of the Road from Nail Bay , up towards Hog Heaven Restaurant to North Sound. One of the Best Constructed Roads in the BVI. He was a real Friend to most people in the BVI. Really Loved Man and Respectable Resident. One of his Top Calypso was: The BVI for Sale...

    Forever live the king. To the family keep your heads up he was a fadda to many of us on Virgin Gorda
    . One thing he alway have a positive message to share whenever he see children doing or going word. Rest in peace King grateful to have known you. A wise man has fallen.
