PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad & Tobago - Patrick Augustus Mervyn Manning, the former Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago died early Saturday July 2, 2016 after being diagnosed with blood cancer.

On Friday, his wife, Hazel A. Manning confirmed that her husband had been suffering from Acute Myeloid Leukemia and was being prepared to undergo treatment.

According to our newsroom’s correspondent in Port of Spain, the twin island’s capital city, at 8:15 AM today (Saturday) former Prime Minister Manning passed away peacefully at the San Fernando General Hospital after battling Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Manning, 69, who served as Prime Minister on two occasions, between 1991-2010, suffered a stroke in 2012 and had received medical attention in the United States. It is with profound sadness that I learnt of the death of Hon. Prime Minister Patrick Manning of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, His death has left a void in the entire Caribbean Region. He has played a very important role in the region especially at the Caricom Heads of government meetings while serving as chairman of Caricom. He was a man of the people and it was a joy to see him walking through the streets of Port of Spain and interact with the people.May his soul Rest In Peace. To all the Trinies in the BVI my sympathy is extended to you all.
