ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Virgin Islands (VI) Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has indicated that a task force set up by ex-Premier, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) to address price gouging in the VI has never functioned.

This was revealed during a Friday, July 22, 2022, one-on-one Press Conference and update on Economic Matters in reference to the surging cost of fuel and other commodities locally.

In response to questioning on the subject, Premier Wheatley said, “Based on my investigations, the task force never really functioned."

Trade Commission will spearhead Task Force

Premier Wheatley; however, noted that moving forward, he will task the Trade Commission with the responsibility.

“They will work together with Central Statistics Office, they will work together with customs, they will work together with the ports, to ensure that we have a system in place.”

He said the system will not only monitor prices but work to ensure that special initiatives like concessions, for example, are passed on to consumers.

Dr Wheatley said the task force will collect information for businesses with the possibility of them agreeing to certain markups on the price of goods, along with more discussions with businesses.

“Now is a good opportunity, I would say, for us to have a broader conversation. We’ve engaged the BVICCHA on the matter, so we are going to be engaged with them in this conversation,” he said, adding that stakeholders involved will include importers and supermarkets.

If there is no price control laws in place then what is the sense?!

EXACTLY! Government cannot legally stop price gauging. This talk of taskforce is just to appease the public and carries no weight or merit.. There's been more than enough time to pass a law on this.

What I don't understand Premier, is that you were part of that administration, and you never noticed the follies of the system then?

    How come now?

I'm gonna wait with baited breath to see what you will do.

After all, perhaps, you too, may have subsidies somewhere in the food industry, and it's all nothing but smoke and mirrors!

If he had challenged the former dictator, he would have ended up on the backbench and we would now have that guy from D5 and the in-law lady running the show. Cant think of anything worse. BTW, I need to send the D5 guy a bill for the damages to my vehicle's suspension caused by those potholes. Also one for the driving stress caused by his change to the traffic directions in Road Town. And the driving stress caused by lack of guard rails on mountain roads.

Anyway, the PM has 3 years left, let's give him his one and only chance to make a positive difference.
