ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports will host a two-day Foreign Language Immersive Extravaganza beginning today, Thursday, May 8, to Friday, May 9, 2025, from 9:00 AM.

The event, which aims to expose students to the Spanish and French language and culture, will take place at the Multipurpose Sports Complex in Road Town.

The Education Officer responsible for Languages, Mrs Janice George-Harris, said the Ministry of Education recognises that language is not only for communication but a gateway to understanding various cultures, broadening perspectives and opening doors to a world of opportunities.

“The Ministry of Education is committed to ensuring that our students are not only learning languages but also gaining the confidence and enthusiasm to use language in real-life contexts,” she said in a Facebook video message.

Food, music, games & interactive activities

The Foreign Language Immersive Extravaganza, she said, will celebrate the vibrant cultures from Spain, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Mexico, France, and Guadeloupe.

“This event offers an opportunity for students and visitors alike to experience these cultures through music, food, games and interactive activities. The goal is to create a dynamic environment where language learning is fun, immersive and unforgettable.”

Students will be exposed to music such as Flamenco, Reggaeton and French Pop, in hopes of helping them develop an ear for the language.

They will also have the opportunity to play traditional games, taste authentic foods from these cultures and engage in hands-on activities that “bring the languages and cultures to life”.

Mrs George-Harris added, “This experience will not only improve their language skills but also foster a greater appreciation for the diverse communities that speak these languages.”

Members of the public are invited to support the Foreign Languages Immersive Extravaganza on Friday, May 9, 2025, from 12:30 to 3:00 PM.

“This is an exciting opportunity for parents, educators and community members to support our students as they explore the richness of Spanish and French speaking cultures,” she stated.
