Persons entering the park with an appetite found themselves in the right place as they had a variety of dishes to select from including peas soup, fish stews and fungi, mutton, dumplings, sweet potatoes, potato pudding, coconut swirl, sugar cake and a variety of local juices such as passion fruit, sugar cane, ginger beer, tamarind and limeade. There was also the famous guava berry wine which this reporter was privileged to sample.
There were also cultural demonstrations such as fish pot making, basket weaving, top spinning and the popular marbles, that drew a large crowd that included Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron Walwyn.
The Minister also visited all the booths in the park as he received handshakes and hugs throughout his tour of the park.
Meanwhile, Deputy Director of Culture Brenda Lettsome Tye told Virgin Islands News Online that she was satisfied with the participation from the public and the variety of VI culture that was exhibited.
She also noted the efforts by members of the community to dress in culture wear.
Ms. Lettsome-Tye disclosed that the Minister of Education has recommended that a national wear be identified, which she said would hopefully see everyone dressed in the national wear at next year’s activity.
Culture Week is held annually in November to highlight and showcase Virgin Islands culture. It was first celebrated in 1994 and strives to promote and preserve the Territory’s cultural heritage while bringing attention to areas in the culture which requires special attention.
