'Flying pig’ wins BVIYC Cooper Islands Race
"Opening remarks from Penny Haycraft took us back to the very beginning, a menu took us on a journey through the decades and the evening rounded out very much in the present with live music from Al Broderick," the BVIYC said in a release.
‘Flying Pig’ takes the 'anniversary' win
The club detailed that one of the very first races the new Yacht Club planned was a Cooper Island Race so it was only right to do the same for the anniversary!
"On Saturday, July 29, 2023, three boats took to the water for a race from Nanny Cay to Cooper Island and, after a fantastic lunch at the Beach Club, raced back to town," the release added.
The Flying Pig took the win in the first race whilst Chris Haycraft’s Ting a Ling sneaked ahead in the second by just 6 seconds. On combined times for the two, Gilbo Simpson’s Flying Pig team came away as the overall winner.
The release added that Alex England’s WannaB was the only monohull entry to compete whilst Matt Holt and his crew on Tern opted for a shorter course across from Hodge’s Creek.
As part of the anniversary event, Commodore Eddie Brockbank extended thanks to the club's long-term sponsors Nanny Cay, Nagico, Golden Hind, Doyle Sails, Latitude 18, and Riteway as well as the local businesses who are supporting its members through the discount programme.
