Florida senate committee moves to advance ‘Miya Law’ for tenant safety
The proposed law came after the family of Marcano lobbied to have state lawmakers file legislation in their daughter's name to make sure no family had to experience their plight.
Cited as 'Miya's Law', the act requires landlords of nontransient or transient apartments to require employees to undergo background screenings as a condition of employment.
The law is also seeking to authorise landlords to disqualify persons from employment under certain circumstances relating to criminal offences; revising what constitutes reasonable notice for repairs of dwelling units.
More requirements
It is also seeking to require public lodging establishments licensed as nontransient or transient apartments, to take certain actions relating to employee background screenings and keys for dwelling units, etc.
On Saturday, October 2, 2021, Florida Sheriff announced that after searching the area just off of Tymber Skan Apartment in Orange County, they discovered a body believed to be Marcano.
In an interview with WFTV Tonight, the Marcano family said that suspected killer, Armando Manuel Caballero who committed suicide, had a master key to the apartment where Marcano lived.
As such, the proposed legislation will mandate how people will have access to other individuals' apartments.
