ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Information coming out of the Virgin Islands Department of Disaster of Management (DDM) is that a flash flood warning is in effect for low-lying and flood-prone areas of the Virgin Islands (VI) valid until midnight tonight Wednesday, February 7, 2024.

DDM said A flash flood warning means that moderate to major flooding is occurring or imminent in the warning area. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

The DDM said Persons in low-lying or flood-prone areas, should take immediate precautions to protect life and property and do not attempt to cross swiftly flowing waters or waters of unknown depth by foot or by vehicle.

“Just one foot of flowing water is could be enough to sweep a car off the road. When encountering flooded roads, be extremely cautious, and if in doubt, turn around don’t drown,” they added.

A frontal trough over the Virgin Islands is causing periodic heavy showers. Up to 4 inches of rain has fallen in some places in the last 24 hours, and another 1–3 inches is expected in the next six hours. Hence, moderate to major flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas is expected.

The DDM said Antigua and Barbuda meteorological services will continue to monitor the weather situation.
