ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI— The fish processing element of the Government’s proposed food processing plant at Paraquita Bay has officially been removed from the project scope due to budgetary constraints, according to Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7).

Never the ‘intention’

The announcement made on June 5, 2025, came after clarifications sought by Eighth District Representative Honourable Marlon A. Penn during the Fifth Sitting of the Second Session of the Fifth House of Assembly (HoA).

According to Premier Wheatley, "I must say that the concept of including a fish processing component at the food processing complex was never properly understood."

He explained that "...it was never my intention for fish catch to land at Paraquita Bay.”

‘Comprehensive fisheries facility’ for Baughers Bay

Instead of including fish processing at Paraquita Bay, the Government, he disclosed, is now shifting focus and resources toward developing a comprehensive fisheries facility elsewhere. “We have adjusted the scope of the food processing complex due to budgetary constraints.”

To this end, he explained, “We have removed the fish processing component and we will be expanding the scope of the fish landing site planned for Baughers Bay to a full fisheries complex.”

As it relates to the Paraquita Bay facility, he explained that the project status is that the current design has been chosen.”

Final designs and approval, he said, are anticipated by the end of July 2025.

Implementation, according to the Premier, is scheduled to commence in October 2025, with construction activities expected to extend into 2026.

To this end, he disclosed that, “Prior to tendering for construction, it is the intent to communicate to stakeholders the revised project scope.”

Big Man try go sit down because this project could have been beneficial to the people of this territory

The budget have ample funding for entertainment, the entertainers come into this territory and substantial sums of money from the government purse are simply handed over to them

why when it comes to projects that are beneficial to our society this administration have issues; just look around this territory

2027 can not come fast enough

Champagne tastes, beer budget. Plus fish stock today are 10% of what they were 50 years ago, and not much of a fishing tradition around here.

It's really essential for members of the Opposition to ask questions. The article says, "Implementation, according to the Premier, is scheduled to commence in October 2025, with construction activities expected to extend into 2026.
To this end, he disclosed that, “Prior to tendering for construction, it is the intent to communicate to stakeholders the revised project scope.”

Aren't members of the public stakeholders?

Why are we even contemplating a food processing plant when we are not growing any food? All the noise about the illegal buildings on Paraquita agricultural land and no action. Strupppes
