ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – More than 35 Virgin Islands (VI) youths departed the territory this afternoon, August 3, 2021, as the first cohort of persons to travel to the US Virgin Islands (USVI) for alternative COVID-19 vaccines under the BVI-USVI Vaccination Bubble initiative.

The initiative, which prioritises 12–17-year-olds, was designed to enhance the current COVID-19 response and mitigation efforts of the Ministry of Health and Social Development, by providing further options and adjusting entry protocols that would support persons wishing to participate.

Premier thanks USVI governor for collaborations

Virgin Islands Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1), who was present at the West End Ferry Terminal to see the youngsters off, thanked the USVI and its Governor, Mr Albert A. Bryan Jr as well as local Governor John J. Rankin CMG for their support in making the collaboration happen.

He also used the opportunity to thank local health officials for their work during this pandemic.

Further, Premier Fahie indicated that the youths will be accompanied by parents as well as Minister for Transportation, Works and Utilities, Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5), who will report on what will be happening on the ground in the USVI.

“So we are seeing over 60 something persons going on this trip today, and it's going to be ongoing, so we want to thank everyone for making this possible,” Premier Fahie said.

“We want to encourage our people to first of all stay prayed up. Only God could help us through this there. There are many variants of COVID on us and coming at us that we have to stay prayed up, that's our first major and solid defense,” he added.

Strengthen immune system - Premier

Premier Fahie has also encouraged persons to further strengthen their immune systems and recommended vaccination against the virus.

“COVID-19 is not going anywhere anytime soon, and more variants are coming… so we have to decide how we are going to work and live, so the best way to do that is to follow all the social measures,” he said.

The Premier called the moment ‘a great day’ for the territory as a testament to the USVI/VI friendship remaining strong enough to collaborate and give persons the best fighting chance against the virus.

  • I view this as a positive and wise decision to vaccinate our youths with anti-civid-19 caccines. (03/08/2021, 20:39) Like (24) Dislike (11) Reply
May God by the mercy of His graceful love bless this lifesaving effort. We are to live by faith, but faith is useless unless mixed with right actions.
Many thanks Gov. Albert Byan and administration for your kind brotherly love in helping to protect our lives.

Why didn’t government just buy the freezer
needed for the Pfizer vaccine rather than sending our kids on a dangerous and unnecessary journey to a foreign country?
      No common sense here.

ARE YOU GOING TO GIVE THE GOVERNMENT THE MONEY TO BUY THE VACCINE?

Not only the freezer, but our public health authority and Government should have had the foresight to have the freezer in stock anyways to stored other vaccines and blood etc. Further they should have stay on par in keeping their systems up to date with the latest science out their to help our people. It would have made sense via the governor office to negoiate with pfizer and J&J to ensured the VI population have enough options available, additionally and importantly antibodies stored and given to non vaccinated, maybe if implemented the death toll would have been less. But as usual our systems and personnel always in reactionary mode. Vision and forward thinking is the way forward for the proper development of these islands.

I'm not sure I understand this. Could someone please explain if it would not have been more efficient for the medication to be sent to the bvi and have it administered here? Or even to have personnel from the usvi come over here to do what they're going to be doing over there? Just not sure I understand.
    Many thanks.

Bill I was thinking the same thing but then I figured it’s merely because of any legal implications arising out of any possible lawsuits of the US drug being administered outside of the approved region, USA and any of its territories. Hope that makes sense.

This administration pride itself in doing for self how about getting a deal to obtain a limited number of the said vaccines on islands, and administer the drugs to our people providing them with more options. If money is the issue then they should have halted the anegada wall project, the re pavement of tola roads and all those non essential projects they signed in the last 6 months. if indeed this was a priority or even take a loan, i dont suspect it would have cause a arm and a leg to purchase.

The USVI can't just send vaccines here because they were paid for and distributed by the federal government. We can't just buy the vaccines from them, nor can they just give them to us even if they wanted to. The solution that was permitted by the USVI after checking with the federal government is the one that you see happening.

Maybe one day in the future, we can buy Pfizer etc ourselves.
    • hmmm (04/08/2021, 05:31) Like (12) Dislike (1) Reply
The vaccine haa to be stored below freezing and we don't have the equipment to keep it.

This is why we never had the vaccine in the first place. Astrazeneca can be stored at refrigeration temperatures which makes it more ideal for us.

Strengthen immune system through prayer and vaccines? WOW!
I would say the best way to strengthen your immunity is by adopting a healthy lifestyle- better diet and more physical exercise. That should be the focus, especially for the young folks who have a lifetime ahead of them. Instead of boarding that boat in order to get an experimental drug, their parents should pay more attention to their kids lifestyle. That would be indeed, being responsible, and I dare to say, reasonable.

There are studies that ahow that religious patients tend to have better outcomes when they are hospitalized when compared to nonreligious patients.

Even doctors and researchers don't understand why. So yes prayer works but our bodies are our temples so we should also eat healthy and exercise.

AstraZeneca's Covid vaccine (most used Covid vaccine in UK and only Covid vaccine available in the BVI) cannot be given to people under the age of 18 as it has not been approved (globally) for that age group. The Pfizer-BioNtech Covid vaccine is in both the US and UK approved as from the age of 12. The UK just started vaccinating 16-17 yr olds with it. This is the vaccine given to the 12-17 year olds in the USVI and what is being administered to 12-17 year olds going over from the BVI.

Some of you people in the BVI are some of the most ungrateful people on this planet, the USVI government extended their hand to help for youngsters to get the vaccine, they didn’t have to , and some of you people hear talking nonsense, almost 70 percent of original St tomian people ancestors come from the BVI, the Governor of the USVI grandmother is from Carrot Bay Tortola, so you just come people to Tortola who don’t know the history of the BVI and the USVI need to go sit down.

The more I read the comments they more I realized how uneducated people are regarding Covid 19, vaccines and etc. clearly, Pfizer and J&J are American approved vaccines and the BVI is British.. they can’t just buy it but will need approval from the U.K; and then the hassle of transport because those vaccines have to be kept at specific temperatures. Astra Zeneca was approved in the UK but not USA.

If one choices for go to such lengths to get a vaccine that they have deemed safe after their personal research - so be it. This was a great initiative by the BVI government to get options for the ones who believe in the vaccination process.

You all are some very ungrateful and unthankful people. The USVI didn’t have to give you all anything. Because of regulations from the US Government, the vaccine could not be brought to the BVI. I am a native BVIslander living and watching from New York and who have also lost a relative and friends right there in Tortola. I also had a few relatives that was tested positive and have since recovered…thank God. If you don’t want to take the vaccine that is your personal choice but don’t knock the ones that do….Remember mask it or casket and 6 feet apart is better 6 feet under..

I am very sorry for some of our people in this territory when it comes to dealing with the COVID-19 VIRUS. For those persons who don't know all the vaccines have the same efficacy when a person is immunize from COVID-19. There are advantages and disadvantages Each brand of vaccines require different temperature for storage. For instance when a nurse can take an iced packed cooler with AstraZeneca vaccine and transport it from Road Town to East End or to Anegada, with the FIZER vaccine they will have to purchase a freezer for each Clinic to store the vaccine Each location where vaccination is done, there is easy access with the brand of vaccine that we have here. For those persons who are talking, it would be advisable to obtain pertinent information before putting your mouth into action.
