How can some people be so insensitive. Stop trying to judge others by your own standards. A house fire can be so traumatizing to those involved why add more trauma?

It's rather disheartening to have such insensitive and low minded folks in our mist.

Quoted from Hon. Marlon Penn’s Facebook post, “I however urge residents to please be responsible regarding starting fires around their property and do so ONLY with the consent, guidance and supervision of the Fire and Rescue Department. Our territory have been going through a very warm and dry period and such unauthorized actions could prove destructive. Thank you and may Almighty God continue bless us all.”

That individual who has been continually burning around their property in lower Great Mountain / Huntums Ghut all hours of the day before 7am at times stinking up people’s homes and being a hazard to others almost daily for years even during Covid STOP IT because IT WILL BE REPORTED to the Fire and Rescue Dept.

Sometimes it is best to keep your mouth shut. If you can’t say something nice, simply keep your trap shut. If your home caught on fire leaving you homeless would you like it if someone had said the same about you? What goes around comes right back around.Think about that.

Sympathy for the loss of the home owner. Whatever the cause of that fire, it is sad to lose your home like that.
But the way some people react is as if lighting a fire to burn brush is a capital offence, its hypocritical; those in power to see about the Territory's affairs have allowed the Pockwood Pond fiasco to continue for generations, but a person cannot light a controlled fire to get rid of garden debris. Years ago, when the BVI was the BVI with BVIslander farmers preparing their ground for planting crops, "slash and burn" was normal. Today, if you try to get rid of a little dry bush or grass without overburdening the spilling over dumpsters, you are coming up against tons of opposition. Who aint complaining that it waking up their asthma, calling police on you out of badmind and spite. Once a fire is being attended to, like someone is there to see that it does not get out of control, there should be no problem in burning a little trash. Freedom is slowly draining away from us, just because we cannot do things properly and because people like to complain for every little thing, with their evil mind to get you in trouble. The Firemen prefer to sit from day to day playing dominoes, but if called to a fire, its a big problem for them. Not saying that we need more fires to give them work to do, but you get the point, hopefully. That said, we are in a dry, hot season, so please be very careful, take care of yourself, drink enough water and stay hydrated before you catch afire too.

I started a little fire to cook a breadfruit and my neighbour asked me to stop , there was hardly any smoke but what there was blowing in his property, fair enough. There are few areas you can slash and burn without affecting residents and it isnt sustainable - good for clearing large areas of bush but poor for crop rotation.
