ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Virgin Islands Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has urged the delegates of the 2023 Miss BVI Pageant to not let negativity stop them from standing with confidence and representing the VI.

The Premier made the statement on Saturday, June 10, 2023, shortly before the delegates were revealed as part of a cultural showcase at the Crafts Alive Cultural Village in Road Town, Tortola.

In congratulating the VI Festival Fairs Committee as well as the Miss BVI Committee for putting together the event, the premier recalled the importance of pageants to the culture of the VI.

“Now Miss BVI holds a special place in my heart, of course, my mom is a former Miss BVI, I have several family members who are former Miss BVI's. Miss BVI in my view really has to do with being an ambassador for the BVI as a destination and also an ambassador for the BVI culture,” he said.

Dr Wheatley further detailed that from his perspective, it is important for the territory to have a queen with qualities such as intelligence, beauty, talent, and someone who is passionate about the VI.

The contestants vying for this year’s 2023 Miss BVI title are Contestant Number 1 - Deborah Smith, Contestant Number 2 - Lakeisha Warner, Contestant Number 3 - Anika Christopher, and Contestant Number 4 - Roshawna Stevens.

Rally around delegates - Premier Wheatley

Meanwhile, the premier called on the community and those present to rally among the women who put themselves forward while adding that it is not an easy thing to vie for a beauty pageant crown, especially in the VI.

“Sometimes you have to fight through negativity, and you have to be able to stand up with a great deal of confidence in yourself, to be able to stand up and on a stage in front of many persons.

The premier reminded that it is a tremendous act of courage to be able to stand on that stage and to represent as he called for all present to give the ladies some applause for their efforts.

“Some persons may want to criticize you or have bad things to say about you, but you stand up despite that, you stand up tall, you represent, you do your best, and in the end of course, the judges have their say and they make their choices,” he said.

If you do negative things and get negative responses, then maybe you should listen and learn. It’s how we get better as people. If this government actually listened to the negative feedback from citizens then this country would be a better place.

You all only know about CULTURE when it benefits. We don’t have any real CULTURE in this place.

Mr. Premier, I understand whole heartedly what you are saying however, the things that you are speaking about is the everyday norm on the Island. Bashing each other is the NEW NORMAL on the Island. Those closest to you is the number one bashers.

Sounds like the requirements to be a beauty queen is greater than the requirements to be the leader of the country. All the best, ladies. I hope you receive a lot of support from the community.
