Festival time encourages man to steal
The defendant who was asked by Magistrate Stephens what encouraged him to steal, replied “the busyness of festival time.”
Mr. Jack pleaded guilty to the charge of theft that was brought to him.
Allegedly, the defendant stole two bottles of Hennessy and one bottle of Grey Goose Vodka from One Mart Supermarket in East End, items totaling to $117.06.
According to the facts given to the court by Crown Counsel Leslie-Ann Faulkner, on July 26, 2012, the defendant entered the supermarket with a black bag and proceeded straight to the liquor aisle.
Under security observation, Mr. Jack allegedly placed the bottles of alcohol in his bag, went to the checkout counter, paid for two bottles of beer, then attempted to leave the supermarket.
Allegedly, the security officer who witnessed it all, stopped the defendant at the door, and requested that his bag be searched. This resulted in the bottles of alcohol being found in his possession.
The court heard that that Mr. Jack allegedly, ran off, leaving the security with the bag of stolen items.
In mitigation, the defendant apologized to the court saying “I am sorry and it won’t happen again… I am willing to pay.”
Magistrate Stephens told the defendant that he was 29 years old and should know better, “you are aware of the consequences, this kind of behaviour cannot be condoned, and you seem like an intelligent young man.”
Mr. Jack was sentenced to 6 months in prison with a suspension of 2 years.
