ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- All employers operating on the Festival Grounds during the upcoming Virgin Islands (VI) Emancipation Festival are reminded that they are to apply for and obtain a work permit for any “non-Belonger/non-BVIslander” they may wish to employ.

This is according to a Bulletin published by the Department of Information and Public Relations on July 15, 2022.

Violation of Labour Code

“Employers are encouraged to submit applications within 5 to10 days in advance of commencement of work. Failure to do so will render persons in direct violation of section 171 of the 2010 Labour Code,” the bulletin stated.

For more information regarding Work Permit Applications, persons can contact the Department of Labour and Workforce Development by telephone at 468-4708 or 468-4780.

The VI Emancipation Festival will be held from July 27 to August 5, 2022, under the theme ‘Celebrating Freedom for Me and You, BVI Festival 2022’.

they can employ non belongers for up to 4 days as long as they have another legal work permit without asking thier current employer and without breaking labour laws. So they need to find staff for 4 day rotations

Why is this now being published? Additionally the people most likely already have a permit, this is too restrictive. In the heart of an Emancipation festival we want to enslave people with work permit restrictions. BVI smh

If they have their regular work permits they pay for already, you charging them again for this little 2 weeks ? No freedom for we expats and the call it emancipation festivities.
Tortola is worst on expats than America on Blacks.

@Well sah, the best way thing to do is for all expats including the Europeans and Asians( which they are not brave enough to challenge but they are always f$@#&g with the people from the other islands) to stay. Let's see how that will work out for the "we from here people", Boycott all the events, it's not emancipation anyway because you have to pay to enter the village. How is that emancipation? Stay home, go to the beach let the locals support the locals... that's it.

You really seem to have a problem with everything we decide here in this territory . What is your problem? Tell us let us give you a month to make all of our decisions and , if they work let you be Premier. Would that satisfy you?
If your answer is no, get your backside out of here if it means I buying your one way ticket .
And by the way ,we need to let you know that you would also need a heallth card./food handlers permit.

Economies need casual workers to function. The Festival is an example but there are many others in everyday life.
The BVI Labour Code does not recognise that fact. One of its many failings.

When some expats come to the BVI they are humble but as soon as they get a jiob they get high and mighty and want the system change to please them. You were humble in yiur country but now you feel you are a big shot.

So they wait last minute to tell the booth owners to get work permits and when the persons do put in the permits it will take one year to approve. Then the committee will also state that on the big night all booths has to be closed. The committee just wanted to make money on the booths and then to frig everyone in the end.

Then you here trying to make BVI festival bitter. Better you follow their culture from their ancestors. Don't bring your culture and then say BVI nice, embrace what the people of the territory are offering. If you are upset it is better you book a flight to your best festival and remain there. You set of ungrateful people all some of you come here for is to drain the people territory. That green back dollar bill so you can have plenty coloured ones.

A lot of all you new comers have no respect, no responsibility, no ethics you are just here because you see greener pastures in the people BVI.

Some of you need to go sit with some of your hometown citizens who have been here for years and lived with the people of this territory. They can teach you a thing or two and how to respect another man's country. You need wisdom and that will help you not to type all kind of foolishness on media for you are cutting off the hand that feed, clothe and shelter you.

Leave them people festival alone they not calling you to come you want to go. Entertain your self in your house since you know how to do it best.

I don't see the problems , they booth owners should dialogue with the Festival Chairs, about give a break them a break for the two weeks, for the permit, but pay for the food handlers.

People should understand the more you tickle the dog, it will bite you. All this nonsense about "go where you come from, if you don't want to abide by the rules " is rude and upsetting, it cause division and the rebut is the lack of support from the expatriate. Imagine the festival, happening and its just the locals celebrating or is it just the local should celebrate?

My friend tell me last night , his wife is not from here and he ain't going no where to upset no body. Because of the nonsense he is reading in the paper is upsetting him. money hard to come now and people has to really think where to spend the money after , gas , electricity and food, he has to look for money for school clothes less than one month later. life is hard, stay prayed up.
