ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has issued a challenge to persons not in favour of modern or revealing parade costume designs to remove from the sidelines and get to designing.

The Premier laid down the gauntlet during an August 24, 2023, press conference on the VI's 69th Emancipation Celebration review, while referencing comments made by former legislator Eileene L. Parsons, OBE who has shared a displeasure that the VI parade has evolved into ‘Feathers & Flesh’ like other regional parades.

Society has changed - Premier

“Early on in the 70s, because of course it was just us, we did our celebrations in a particular way. Now, of course, we've transitioned into something different because our society has changed. What I would like to see us be more of going forward is really to be intentional about who we want to be as a people,” Premier Wheatley said.

Dr Wheatley added that it is for the people to decide where they want to go and who they want to be.

“So we have to have a conversation about our society, we have to grow. And you grow through having conversations, you go through as a result of those conversations. Taking action is something that we can't be passive about. We have to be active participants in what we want to see and what we want to do,” he added.

He said in the case of the ‘feathers and flesh’ comment, hundreds of young women and men embraced the type of costumes people have been critical of.

Go out there & do a costume - Premier

“And the persons who have a challenge with it, did you have an equal number of persons who embrace what it is that they wanted to see? Come for the 70th, are you challenging yourself that you're going to go out there and do a costume in the way that you think it should be done?” he questioned.

He added, “And if you're not willing to do that and you're only willing to stay on the sidelines and complain about it, well, you know it will be what it will be.”

Ms Parsons, speaking on the July 30, 2023, edition of Real Talk with Karia J. Christopher, said: “Years ago, a reporter in Trinidad writing in a Trinidad newspaper, say Trinidad Carnival had become nothing but feathers and flesh. This was a Trinidad reporter… Trinidad Carnival has become nothing but feathers and flesh. This is what has happened to us,” she said.

Premier Wheatley reiterated that the way forward is for the VI as a collective to decide on who they want to be.

So the Premier BASICALLY SAYING whatever the majority embraces REGARDLESS if it’s inappropriate or goes against the WORD OF GOD, that’s it’s A-OK.

I already say no number of degrees could give someone integrity, class, or COMMON SENSE!!!

This is the same Premier that was up in Long Look Church after the fiasco with the former Premier saying he going do right by God.

He is nothing but a mouth champion.

Ezekiel 16:43 “Because you have not remembered the days of your youth but have enraged Me by all these things, behold, I in turn will bring your conduct down on your own head,” declares the Lord God, “so that you will not commit this lewdness on top of all your other abominations.”

All of your favorite politicians are mouth champions and negotiators for their self-interests. How else will their catchy slogans and jingles, smear campaigns, empty promises and grand public speeches bamboozle voters?

I have to agree with you. I saw him in Long look prophesy pulpit saying the same thing. People say anything watch their actions I always say. Look for the fruit he is bearing
If he is comfortable with those costumes it says alot about who he is.

there are plenty of appropriate styles to choose from when initially getting these costumes it’s what they want that they get.

Some females in the community are being kept! Undercover prostitution for rent, money, car payments, jewelry and to get their hair and nails done. Wearing sexually alluring clothing in the streets is just 'advertisement' for these nasty men!

@ Hmm, SMDH, there is no age limit for Self-Respect, which is very lacking during our festivals. Until this world ends, there must be Self-Respect! Respect does not belong to any age group. Nobody's time is gone until they are 6 feet in the ground, yes including your dim-wit self.

If the sideline people only knew how much energy and sweat it takes to perform in a parade in the hot sun they will shut up their backside.

To be honest, some of those bodies are not fit for the feathers and flesh costumes. I actually see elephant butts on some of them, but to each their own. I chose to stay in the comfort of my home parade day and watch the feathers and flesh from my computer screen.

They still won’t dress in the non revealing options it’ll be a waste of time. They pick the thongs and costumes with half their breast hanging out because that is what this generation is into to that is what they like. Vulgar and raunchy outfits.

I understand times have change but which man would be happy if that is their wife or gf on that picture above. now look its on WWW the whole world can see that a>s if the read vino news. I'm sure the premier would not like it if the first lady dress so and is in a troupe. Times change yes but that doesn't mean our character and pride should too. Those people can wear all the feather they want but just cover up a little more if we want see someone dressed like pic above we will go strip club.

Bringing men in this conversation don't make sense. You saying that but what about men choosing these type of women who like to show the whole world what only their man should see? Even on the boat rides some women bathing suit is like a string. Out of all the women in the parade, there is still a whole heep of decent women who don't partake in those kind of activities and some men still won't look their way. 90% of the women in the parade either taken or got their costumes paid for by a man. So men will be with who they want anyways.

Women need to understand their value and that's it

I understand what you saying but those men wouldn't want to watch a decent dress lady when right next to her another one is showing flesh for free no need to go to a S club. Lol

Not what to do to get it even better is to separate the children from the adults and have theirs the saturaday before up by the collage grounds and have a soca monarch for them and leave the mondsy for the adults with a longer journey and you see it gets better because we adults can't enjoy ourselves with children amongst us so changes we need

I'm so disappointed in the premier but not surprised. After all the whole country was against the $250,000 concert but he went ahead any ways. So many voices are now saying they don't want the revealing costumes and instead of making an appeal to the organizers to ensure the costumes are regulated he is putting it back in the hands of the same people who are designing the costumes. I really fo hope that decency and good judgment reign in the hearts of all those who will take part next year. The leaders of our country don't care.

You all need to wake up. These people running this country traffic kids it doesn't matter how good you think you know them. The work for the devil himself. All freemason pledge they do and you all think it's from the Creator. I am amazed with how you all would rather have young kids watching naked women because this are strings not panty like my mother would say. No classy women now a days. Cover up and look good. The devil have you all as sex slaves and you all won't see it.

Festival and Fairs need to have a criteria for the parade. We are proud people and we need to keep our culture. Who want to enter MUST follow us and not the other way around.
    • who know (27/08/2023, 08:40) Like (1) Dislike (0) Reply
Keep culture? First you got to teach it in schools. Why they take out cultural wear out of the prince and princess show? Those in charge of these shows throw your culture out the door.

All I know is that I tried to drop off something to a Government office in my maxi dress, cute as a button and I was told I could not. I also tried to pick up something from the Police Station with only my arms out but my dress a few inches above my ankle and was turned away. So why is it permissible for women to dress like harlots and sluts in the parade and then bend their a$$ over and shake it in my face? There were also children and seniors there. I wish the Premier would keep quiet when he has nothing sensible to say. This is sad indeed. When you don't stand for something, then you fall for anything. Case in point here.

In the days of Noah God brought a great flood to replenish and start again because of mankind’s evil ways. Don’t be deceived… there is ‘judgement’ along side of grace. Repent!
