Fast-paced game expected in Hon Fraser League tonight
Game one of the finals between West Gunners and Splash Brothers tips off at 7:30pm at the Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duff's Bottom today, November 6, 2015.
Both finalists have admitted that their opponents are quick on the court and that defense will be key.
West Gunners, who eliminated defending champions Bayside Blazers in the Western Division Finals, said their practice sessions were somewhat affected by the inclement weather but it should not have a major impact on their game.
"We had a little disadvantage because of the rain, because we practice on an outside court. We only went once a week," commented Western Division Championship MVP Ray D. Victor to Virgin Islands News Online.
Knowing your opponent, however, makes a huge difference and West Gunners are aware who they are coming up against and what their game plan should be.
"The difference between Splash Brothers and the other teams is that Splash Brothers actually match up to us. The other teams had big guys but these guys are small but quick so it will be much harder for us to switch up because we have to keep up with the pace. The guys are smaller and they can really shoot the ball so we have to play some disciplined defense," Mr Victor shared.
One of the inspirational players for West Gunners, Victor said the key for his team would be to rebound the ball well. "I have been watching Splash Brothers play and second chances are what have been benefitting them. If we limit them to one shot per possession we could come out on top. We need to get that first rebound."
Splash Brothers talisman Shamoii A. Dagou expressed confidence that his team was game ready to topple West Gunners.
"We already know our game plan so we just going there and do what we got to do," Dagou told Virgin Islands News Online this morning.
Asked whether the weather hampered their training sessions, Mr Dagou said his team trains at the Belle Vue gym so they were able to work on some of their plays.
Asked what was key for Splash Brothers to win, Mr Dagou said: "We have been playing together and so we just have to come out with the same mentality again.
"It's a running game, you have to run. West Gunners are also a quick team so it will be a fast game."
