ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – As the agriculture and Fisheries market 2024 gets on the way, farmers have come together to discuss agriculture methods in the Virgin Islands and learn of new methods of farming in territory.

According to information shared by the Government Information Service (GIS), the farmers met to discuss Regenerative Agriculture which is a way of farming that works with nature to help tackle climate change and ecological collapse.

The session was held on Thursday, March 13, 2024, with the presentation made by Agroecologist and farmer Ms. Nea Talbot of Full Belly Farm, Mount Fertile in Tortola and featured the Premier Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley and Minister for Agriculture & Fisheries, Dr Karl Dawson in attendance.

Regenerative agriculture is an evolution of conventional agriculture, reducing the use of water and other inputs, and preventing land degradation and deforestation.

More productive farming

It protects and improves soil, biodiversity, climate resilience and water resources while making farming more productive and profitable.

Ms. Talbot, who is also a consultant and leading advocate for the development of a robust local food system in the Virgin Islands was able to share vital information with farmers regarding the process of Regenerative agriculture.

Founder and Executive Director of the Virgin Islands Good Food Coalition Mrs. Sommer Sibilly-Brown of the US Virgin Islands moderated the session.

The session was a scheduled event to observe the Agriculture and Fisheries Exhibition and Market 2024 themed, “Sow the Seeds of Sustainability: Youth Fueling Food Security”.
