Family battling to help scooter accident victim walk again
A relative speaking to Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) told this news website, “He was involved in a scooter accident on the afternoon of May 18, 2020 [and] he's been in ICU at the hospital with traumatic injuries ever since.”
The motor scooter accident took place on Fort Hill.
Fractured skull & damaged ligaments
According to the relative, the young man suffered a fractured skull and the ligaments in his right knee are badly damaged and needs immediate surgery which cannot be done in the VI.
As a result of the skull fracture also, it is impairing Kawa’s movement on the right side of his body.
“He's in the process of being flown to Columbia for further surgeries to fix the injuries that he sustained. I will keep you posted of his progress once we get to Columbia but for right now we need everyone to share [and] donate in whatever way you can,” the relative said.
Williams is scheduled to be airlifted to the South American country later today, May 26, 2020, and the family and friends, as well as his past teachers from the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS), have since organised a GoFundMe account to raise some of the funds.
NHI covering 80% of expenses
“NHI will cover 80% of his surgery expenses leaving 20% for his mom to pay. It is our desire to help her cover this amount as well as other expenses she’ll encounter while being in Columbia with him. We’re asking for the help of our community near and far. Anything you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance. God bless,” the GoFundMe page noted.
The family has so far thanked the doctors and nurses at the Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital for their work in keeping Williams alive ahead of the airlift to Columbia.
The GoFundMe page can be found here and the family has since raised $1470 of the $12,000 target. Persons looking to reach out to provide help and support can call 284-545-8560 or ESHS teacher Roxanne McNeil at 284-443-7619.

No helmet and his scooter taken from the scene of the crash says s****n or illegal, sorry he couldn't ride his bike properly but sh*t happens and he brought it allon himself. If you want the money give the police the scooter
None really.
Karma doing what karma does.
Every parent and scooter rider, THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS f you drive a s****n bike without a helmet. Government - this is what happens if you don't enforce ANY rules!
Wishing the gentleman everything well....
That young rides like an @#$
Augustus, wake the heck up. Governors have power. Control your police force get action.
Not a Daddy in sight.
2) The kid was repeatedly told to wear a helmet. It’s not just him that doesn’t and a massive part of why they don’t is peer pressure. He also saved and bought his own bike.
3) it didn’t happen after curfew so stop stirring unsubstantiated shit.
4) Any of you going to come with better solutions for the young kids to a) get around the islands and b) what else to do. Sports are currently banned. Apparently all of you were complete saints when you were kids and never did anything wrong.
You want scooters to get banned then let’s get a proper bus service around the islands 24/7.
1. Riding without helmet and break the law now needs the public assistance to fix a fractured skull. That makes sense?
2. Motorcycle removed from the scene before the police arrived. The only assumption is that the bike is illegal and have not proper paperwork or insurance. If the bike was insured the parents wouldn't be begging assistance now.
I hope that this accident serves as a lesson to other bike riders. Do the ride thing all the time. Wear your helmets and ensure that you all get and have proper paperworks for your motorcycle.
Having said that I hope the BVI community will still assist financially to this ypung man. Wish for him a speedy recovery and this may be his turning point in which this accident will be the one that saves many more lives.
