ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Shaw University's Shaniqua “Bam-Bam” Fahie threw a two-hit gem in the opening game of the doubleheader with Virginia University-Lynchburg last weekend to help power the Lady Bears to a sweep of the games, 7-0 and 5-4.

In the first game, Fahie gave up only two hits in her complete game (seven inning) performance while striking out 15 and walking only one. She had a no hitter going until the leadoff batter in the fifth inning, when Brooklyn Samuel sent a seeing-eye single through the middle of the infield.  Until that point, no VUL ball had made it into the outfield.

The Shaw offense had a standout performance as well, despite the fact that their first inning run was enough to win the game with Fahie on the mound. The Lady Bears added three in the third, another one in the fourth and two in the bottom of the sixth for the seven-run tally.

Fahie also had 4 at bats with 1 hit and 2 RBI.

The second game had its share of drama, with the action coming at the plate rather than on the mound. Fahie returned to the mound for the second game, as did Kalyn Weibel for the Lady Dragons. Fahie cruised through four innings giving up only one hit.

In the fifth, with the Lady Bears up 1-0, Fahie gave up four runs on four hits and two Shaw errors, giving the Lady Dragons a 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Kemesha Braithwaite opened the frame with a single to shortstop then advanced to second on a passed ball.  She scored when Talyor Moore singled to right field. Kiana King singled, moving Moore to second, and one out later, Manley sent a ball screaming down the left field line, scoring Moore and moving King to third.

VUL's Weibel, who was pitching her fourth game in two days, then shut down the Lady Bears and got the Lady Dragons out of the inning with a 4-3 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, still trailing 4-3, Gina Yozzo singled, and then advanced to third on two successive wild pitches. Braithewaite then sacrificed her home, but Shaw was able to do nothing more offensively that inning, leaving the contest tied at 4-4.

After sending the Lady Dragons down in order in the top of the seventh, the Lady Bears got a one-out double from Manley, who then scored to win the game on two successive passed balls.

Manley and Yozzo each had two hits for the Lady Bears in the second game.

Fahie pitched five innings in the second, allowing four runs, none of them earned, striking out four and walking two. Taylor Moore got the win in relief, pitching two innings without giving up a hit, striking out one and walking one.

With the wins, Shaw closes out the season at 16-24.  VUL drops to 14-18 on the season.

I have been and only ever see team members - nobody supports this sport. They need to turn the softball field into a Tennis court to get a crowd there.
