Fahie: I will not fight for VIP leadership

Hon. Fahie says the VIP needs someone that will keep it together.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Though many believe that 1st district representative Andrew Fahie is a front runner to head the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) when its current leader steps down, Hon. Fahie said he will never fight for the position.

“You would hear people say certain things, I don’t believe in fighting for something you do not have...If when the party has its meeting and it’s not me that is not the end of the world. I do not get attached to post I get attached to purpose. If I wake one morning and I am not leader of the party that does not make me feel less of a man. My thing is if someone can do it better than me, go ahead,” the former Education Minister told Virgin Islands News Online in an exclusive interview.

In his opinion, Fahie said the party needs someone who will bring “us together and not apart”.

“We need people that will realise people’s strength and stop exploiting people’s perceived weaknesses. That not only goes for the VIP but for all parties,” he said.

The party’s current leader is Hon. Ralph T. O’Neal.

Cognizant of the fact that there are reports of infighting within the party, the 1st district representative stressed that he will never fight for power because power comes from God.

“If he doesn’t want me to have it no matter how hard I fight for it, it will be blocked. If he wants me to have it, it is going to come true. I just want the future for the VIP to stay within the structures that we have developed over the years, and for all of us to improve on our weak areas,” Hon. Fahie disclosed.

Moreover, he congratulated the National Democratic Party (NDP) for its victory in the November 7 General Elections, but predicted the new Government will have an uphill battle over the next few months.

Hon. Fahie added, “I know the blame game will start very soon but at the end of the day there is no country that is economically sound right now. You have to do a lot of juggling.”
