ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – For the elated and proud mother of X-Factor finalist and Virgin Islander Melanie Amaro, if her daughter wins X-Factor or comes close, it is what God has destined for her as Deborah Sylvester Amaro opened up into Melanie’s early singing talent which was detected from as early as six months old!

Today Wednesday December 7, 2011, Melanie, 19, and her four other top five contenders will be performing at 7/8C on Fox and tomorrow Thursday December 8, the decision as to who remains in the Top 3 spot will be revealed.

In an exclusive interview with Virgin Islands News Online from her Florida home, Mrs. Amaro expressed her sadness with not being able to be with her daughter for this part of her performance but expressed her profound satisfaction with where she has reached and their trust in God of her future.

“I feel like I am dreaming all now, I don’t feel like it’s real, like everything is just happening so fast I am very proud of her and excited for what she is doing,” the elated mother told this news agency.

“I believe what God has for her is for her and whether she wins or comes close I think is all the will of God. And we truly appreciate that,” said Mrs. Amaro.

Melanie has at stake the chance to win the $5 million dollar recording contract and the opportunity to star in the Pepsi commercial to be aired during Super Bowl Sunday.

Mrs. Amaro revealed that though Melanie was born in Florida but spent her early life in the Virgin Islands living with her grandparents, the late Inspector Wilson Sylvester and her grandmother Catherine Sylvester, today she still bears the Virgin Islands accent and proudly announced on X-Factor her affiliation to her home country.

She attended the Althea Scatliffe Primary and also her early high school years at the then BVI High School now Elmore Stoutt High School. After her grandfather died, Melanie lived for sometimes with Mrs. Amaro’s sister Yoland Sylvester before she returned to the US to live with her mom where she continued to live to date.

The proud mom said “Tortola” is Melanie’s home and that is all she tells people as she only sees herself as a Virgin Islander and nothing else. On X-Factor’s last airing, Melanie broke down in tears as she revealed her VI’s accent and said she was happy to reveal that is who she was.

“She is a wonderful young lady that is how she is, a humble young lady, she would walk away if they are to ask her to do something she is not comfortable with,” the mother revealed.

Giving a recap of Melanie’s early singing career, Mrs. Amaro traces it back to her pregnancy and Melanie’s infant stage.

“When I was pregnant with her, we are Christians, when I went for a revival meeting, the minister that was preaching called me up out of the crowd and told me, he put a song in my baby’s heart and she will always be singing,” Mrs. Amaro recalled, noting that she was seven months pregnant and didn’t even know she was having a girl baby.

She recalled when Melanie was just about six months old she would get up around 2 a.m. and would sing. “We don’t know what she is singing and she would go back to sleep and she hasn’t stopped singing since.”

She said her daughter has never really entered competitions before but was always singing at weddings, churches and other events.

Regarding her entrance into X-Factor in April and how she decided to get into it, Mrs. Amaro revealed that she pushed her daughter to enter into the competition and today is proud of that decision. She also revealed that she was encouraged to send her to American Idol but they had to pray about it as a family, but when X-Factor came along, she felt it was time for her.

“… when X Factor came along she really didn’t want to go, the last night I was at the sink washing dishes and told her it was her season you need to go and do the audition. I said Melanie I will make the decision for you, put on your clothes and you do it, so I took her down and because she was the last one to do the audition when everyone doing it, she always had to be last … it was really really hard, it had thousands of people and she had to wait till the last, we had a lot of auditions but I am really really proud to see where she has ended up.”

Melanie has received raving reviews from across the world for her singing talent and more recently her rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song” has given viewers and listeners another glimpse into just what this Virgin Islander singing talent is made of.

Regarding her academic path, Mrs. Amaro said her daughter would like to become a pediatrician and was about to start college in the field of nursing when she got into X-Factor.

Mrs. Amaro thanked the Virgin Islands for their support of Melanie and urged them to vote for her as that is what will help her to stay in the top and even become the winner.

“I just want to ask the people of the BVI to vote for her who can vote, who have the magic jack, on X-Factor. She needs all the votes she can get, you can vote multiple times and I thank you in advance for doing so.”

Melanie is also the proud daughter of Hipolito “Junnie or Pops” Amaro of St. Thomas and has three siblings, Micheal, Mark and a younger sister, Maya.

For the next round which is slated to show today Wednesday, December 7, 2011, viewers will be able to cast votes for Melanie to secure her spot among the Top 3.

To vote persons can do so by either calling toll-free via Melanie’s personalised toll free number displayed during the show, via Verizon SMS/text message (for Verizon subscribers only), online via www.TheXFactorUSA.com, or Twitter direct message voting at http://twitter.thexfactorusa.com.

Girl Debbie I been voting for Melanie from day one. I been asking all my friends to vote for Melanie. You looked so good on television, it really brought back a lot of memories from high school. Hey Debbie, this is Melanie's season and she WILL WIN. I was kinda scared for her with that little girl who is giving her a run for her money, but have no fear, God is in there. Hope you will make it on the day she celebrates her win. Love much Debbie, I know if Inspector Sylvester was alive today, he would be bursting with pride.

Oh Debbie, I am so proud of Melanie. Reading this article brings much tears to my eyes. The last time I heard her singing was at Ms. Barzey's 90th birthday. She was awesome. Melanie is truly a beautiful singer whether she wins X-Factor or not. Continue to encourage her and certainly we at home will be voting for her as much as we can. Unfortunately, some cant vote because it wont allow but if they have family members that can I encourage all to tell them vote for Melanie...... God Bless You all and best of Luck.....

I am very impressed with Melanie's performance, but I am very disappointed with the quick grab mentality of my fellow Virgin Islanders. Melanie was not born in the Virgin Islands, but only went to school here and speaks like us. We give her all the props for putting us on the map. If she had done something horribly wrong we would not have wanted her to be identified with the Virgin Islands (BVI) This is some what hypocritical. We have people born in the Virgin Islands (Tortola) not of BVI parentage, but none the less born here! We treat them like the scum of the earth just because they are running for political office. But they lived with us, taught by us, contributed for us, and yet we shun them!!! What kind of place do we have?? The rest of the civilized world is looking on in amazement at our attitude. For we born our children in the USA, UK and we love the fact that they are Americans, and UK citizens. Why cant we accept this with our fellowman when the do the same here??? I am so ashamed and embarrassed to know this is the level we have come as a people. Mark Vanterpool contributed heavily to this territory. He was good so long as he do not run for politics. The expats are good to come in as tourists, so long as they do not come to work. But we spending millions to get them to come here. We must stop this nonsense!!! We are not indigenous to the Virgin Islands either! We are Africans transplanted and we treat our fellow free slaves just like the others treated us. What a mess we are in as a people. When we go to heaven, if some of us do, will there be Tortolains, St. Thomians, Americans? No!!! There will be God's people from every nation kindred and tongue!!! Let us stop this hypocritical nonsense and accept with open arms all people. If we can raise them and educate them, then they should be good enough for us to have them lead us even in the HOA. That's my heart poured out.

Why are you here generalizing? Say SOME people In the Virgin Islands. Not all of us display that level of ignorance. I know I have never ever acted like that in my life and neither has anyone in my family. Another thing, where you born is the most overrated thing on the face of this earth. Its where you grew up thats makes you who you are. Thats what impacts your life. I wasn't born in the BVI, but this is where I was raised and this where my family is from. Just like Melanie. Holding this born here bs over someones head is ignorance.

Educator, I like what you said in your response, the last sentence, " Holding this born here bs over someones head is ignorance." That is true and that is why I wrote what I wrote. If it sounds ugly and distasteful it is because it is a reality in our territory. I listened to the speech of the Newly installed speaker of the house and she said we are apart of a global community, and that the entire world is watching us. Watching how we relate to our selves within, watching how we relate to outsiders, watching how we govern ourselves. We are also detracting from our progress. For if we cannot live together as one, how can we live together as a immigrant nation? We will be our own down fall for expats would not want to invest with us, or, maybe they will come, but with ulterior motives and that might be to divide and conquer. So based on how we treat our own, they will respond. So if the child raised here, or if the child born here, or adopted here. He/she is a tortolian and should be allowed to run for office here!!!!!
