ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Sources within Her Majesty’s Customs Department have told our news centre that former 5th District candidate and Virgin Islands Progressive Movement (VIPM) member, Mr Wade N. Smith will return to the top job at the Department.

Mr Smith is expected to return in the coming weeks as “the paperwork is being finalised,” our newsroom was told.

There were talks about a United Kingdom (UK) national taking over the post but this was reportedly fought off by the Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1)-led Administration.

Mr Smith served 15 years as Commissioner of Customs before he resigned in 2018 to contest a seat in the 5th District under the breakaway group from the main National Democratic Party (NDP). The VIPM was headed by former NDP Government Minister, Ronnie W. Skelton.

Smith defeated in District 5

Mr Smith was defeated in the 2019 general elections by the Virgin Islands Party’s candidate, Honourable Kye M. Rymer (R5), the now Minister for Transportation, Works and Utilities, in a three-man race. Hon Rymer crushed his opponents, receiving 638 votes to Smith’s 396. The NDP’s Elvis J. Harrigan received a mere 204 votes.

Late last year, Mr Smith was appointed to act in the post of Director of the Financial Investigative Agency; however, the substantive holder of the post is back.

Internal view of Smith's return?

Many Customs Officers have expressed mixed feelings about Mr Smith’s return but refused to talk on record in regards to their opinions on what the return of Mr Smith to the Customs Department means.

Mr Smith could not be reached for comments up to the time of publication.

Put Mr. Smith right back there to do what he should have done, which is to train competent people to take over so he can retire. I hope that training is the number one component of his job description. Outsiders, though they don't have ties, only A$$ lick to get to the people in power. They are usually too concerned about what they will lose so they don't tell the truth to their superiors. Mr. Smith can do that!!!!!!!!

Clearly, VIP is not as vindictive as NDP. After the 2015 General Election, Dr. Karl Dawson, for President of HLSCC and an VIP At Large candidate, was kicked to the curb and rescued by Anguilla as president of community college. Also remember V. Vincent O’Neal, former Port Managing Director, being kicked to the curb. If Wade Smith has deemed as the best qualified for the job, let’s get it done. Oh, just remember, Guy Hill, former Deputy CIO, being kicked to the curb.

Obviously, no one else qualified or those that did had something preventing them from receiving the position. Everyone have their faults, EVERYONE. There will always be persons saying why one man should have over another but there must be a reason that the post was vacant this long and it was given back to Mr. Smith. Would you rather a local or not. Either man seems fine just uphold your pledge to the people.

It’s hard to please you people , guess the best thing was to allow U.k to come and controll both the police and customs departments. Before tearing someone apart one must first look at his/her accomplishments and stick top facts rather than unfounded truth and gossips. It’s a generational curse for us as a people to
pull our brothers/sisters down .We are like crabs in a bucket. Word of advice, every time you speak negatively about someone God has chosen you just add POWER to them

Firstly, this is for Oh boy. I have been reading Vino, Bvinews and Platinum News from their inception and never saw a blogger using the name " Oh boy". However from the time i began using that name to blog, here comes another " oh boy".
You know who You are so please go find your own blogger name.
Now secondly to you VINO , i do not know if you have a way of identifying the bloggers so you chooses which comment and from which blogger you publish. And please don't tell me it is because after it is edited it doesn't meet the standard for publication because after i read some comments that are published i shake my head in disbelief at what is published.
I sent a comment as soon as i read this headline and i am yet to see it published and it is not the first or second time it has happened.
So please Mr. Editor please publish this comment because I will like both you and Mr Copy Cat who is using my blogger name to get the message. Thank you.
    From the original "Oh boy"

As a BVIslander I am disappointed in how we so readily tear down each other while we are mocked and laughed at behind our backs. We BVIslanders need to stop this stupidness and come together to support our own. There are no perfect human beings. We are all flawed in one way or the other. Truth be told I would rather have our own as Head of every Government Department than any white man. I am not being racist I am being real. Wade is one of us like him or not and as a BVIslander I am for BVIslanders. If we BVIslanders are given the opportunity to serve in important position and don’t do the right thing and the hammer have to be brought down on us so be it but don’t tear down for tearing down sake man geez.

Why government keep bringing back all these retirees? What happens to giving another person a chance? I know that there are enough customs officers that can be promoted to act in this position. God forbid today /tomorrow Mr. Smith dies wouldn't they find a replacement? that is the problem I see in the public service, the lack of succession planning. When these senior public servants retire they go with all their knowledge so government is left with no option but to bring them back on contract or in another senior role, so the upcoming young people not getting a chance to be promoted and develop their full potential.

As one who has many interactions with Customs, I will say that the Department has been much more transparent, professional, consistent and reasosnable under the leadership of Leslie Lettsome, the Acting Commissioner. He should be made permanent.
